Springer Redesigns Materials Database
Springer Science+Business Media relaunched its SpringerMaterials database with a more user-friendly design and migrated it to the same technology as the SpringerLink platform. SpringerMaterials now offers the same features as SpringerLink, includes responsive design, and provides “user journeys” that allow researchers to search, refine, and analyze content in new ways.Planned for 2015 are additions and updates to content as well as the introduction of new databases, including an 80,000-page materials review database. “We will constantly add new features and new content to our platform as a result of continuing discussions with customers and scientists across the globe,” says Michael Klinge, executive editor and head of the SpringerMaterials editorial team. “Customer feedback, scientific needs and technological trends are the key elements for further developing the SpringerMaterials platform.” Source: Springer Science+Business Media
CrossRef Integrates Services With PKP
CrossRef teamed up with the PKP (Public Knowledge Project) open source software initiative to help publishers on PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) management platform use CrossRef’s services more effectively. Their agreement provides for software features such as an enhanced CrossRef plug-in for OJS that automates DOI (digital object identifier) deposits and the creation of new tools for extracting references from submissions. Additionally, OJS’ publishers will be able to join CrossRef through PKP.The newest version of OJS includes other improvements designed to benefit CrossRef members, one of which is the ability for plug-in users to deposit Open Researcher and Contributor IDentifiers (ORCID), which OJS can now accept during the author registration and article submission processes. This version also facilitates further integration with CrossRef’s features and services. “It has been challenging for some [small publishers] to meet our membership obligations like outbound reference linking and arranging for long-term archiving. And many have not been able to participate in newer services, because they require the ability to deposit additional metadata,” says Ed Pentz, CrossRef’s executive director. “We want all of our publishers to have a level playing field, regardless of their size. 3M Cloud Library Partners With NOOK for Library Lending
3M Library Systems made Barnes & Noble’s NOOK GlowLight part of its lending options for 3M Cloud Library. U.S. libraries can purchase GlowLight e-readers directly from Barnes & Noble to loan to their patrons and offer access to 3M Cloud Library titles on the devices.To use this compatibility, patrons check out 3M Cloud Library ebooks on library computers and then visit the lending desk so library staff can load the borrowed titles onto a GlowLight, which is preloaded with secure software by Barnes & Noble community relations managers. The software locks down the devices so they can only be used by the library’s account, won’t require a patron’s personal information, and become inoperable once titles are due. “What’s unique about our program is that patrons can choose the titles they want to read, rather than borrowing a pre-loaded device with a title they may not be interested in,” says Tom Mercer, 3M Cloud Library’s marketing manager. “Our program gives patrons choice and allows libraries to extend digital reading to more people in their community.” Source: 3M Library Systems
Semantico Will Build Content Platform for IOS Press
IOS Press selected Semantico to create its new content platform, which has a planned 2015 launch with a streamlined content delivery infrastructure, better discoverability, and enhanced search functionality. The publisher’s growing collection of STM books and journals cover topics such as the computer sciences, mathematics, medicine, and the natural sciences.Semantico will use its Scolaris and SAMS products to design, engineer, and build the platform. Journals will be incorporated into it alongside books, and the journals, books, and website interfaces will have a consistent style. Also, customers will be able to conduct full-text searches. OCLC Produces White Paper on Econtent in Libraries
OCLC worked with a group of professionals from libraries and content providers to release a white paper, “Success Strategies for Electronic Content Discovery and Access.” It identifies data quality issues in the content supply chain and gives recommendations for improved econtent usage, discovery, and access in libraries.The E-Data Quality Working Group found data quality issues in libraries’ econtent that impede discoverability. In the white paper, suggestions for improving data exchanges among libraries, data suppliers, and service providers include enhancing and synchronizing bibliographic metadata and using consistent data formats. “We recognize that all of us, as participants in the content supply chain, have a shared interest in improving content discovery and access for library users through better quality bibliographic metadata and holdings data. We also recognize that we have a shared responsibility to improve the quality of the data exchanged and to implement more effective data exchange workflows,” says Suzanne Kemperman, OCLC’s director of business development and publisher relations. EBSCO Offers Genealogy Resource
The MyHeritage family history network created a service for institutions that is now available to libraries exclusively via EBSCO Information Services. Patrons can use MyHeritage Library Edition to learn about their ancestors from an online collection of international resources, including billions of historical documents—birth and death records, U.S. and U.K. censuses, immigration and military records, etc.—and millions of photos from the past 5 centuries.MyHeritage Library Edition is available in 40 languages and has information from 48 countries. Its search engine automatically handles translations, synonyms, and spelling variations, and its Record Detective technology recommends additional records with search results. Annual Review of Virology Debuts
Annual Reviews launched a new journal, the Annual Review of Virology, which captures and describes advances in the medical community’s understanding of viruses in animals, plants, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protozoa. It also includes reviews of discoveries in basic and applied virology such as studies of virus structure and replication and immune responses to viral infections. Volume 1 is available for free on Annual Reviews’ website until September 2015.The journal’s editor is Lynn W. Enquist, a professor of molecular biology at Princeton University. “Our vision in starting the Annual Review of Virology was to find innovative ways to communicate the excitement of virology and the important advances in the field to students and colleagues in an age of information overload,” he says.
