Outside the Lines Encourages Creativity and Innovation in Libraries

Outside the Lines, a celebration of the creativity and innovation happening in libraries, began on Sept. 14 and continues until Sept. 20. More than 135 libraries in the U.S. and Canada agreed to sponsor creative outreach and community engagement events and campaigns that show libraries’ relevance in their communities. The events at the following libraries exemplify Outside the Lines’ mission:
  • Douglas County Libraries leveraged its partnership with local brewers to create the Great Douglas County Beer Tour, which encourages patrons to print passports from the library website and tour five local breweries to collect stamps. They can return their completed passports to a library branch to receive a commemorative pint glass.
  • ImagineIF Libraries aims to advertise its 3D printers and other tools with the Outside the Lines 3D Experience for patrons, who can visit a library branch to make 3D glasses, print 3D designs, and participate in a 3D-image scavenger hunt in the community.
  • Hollins University’s Wyndham Robertson Library offers hiking packs—which include blankets, sunscreen, bug spray, and disposable cameras—that students and faculty can check out for the Library Hike. Library staffers placed books along the local trails for hikers to find.

The DPLA Adds Medical and Governmental Sources

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) announced partnerships with the Medical Heritage Library (MHL) and the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). Almost 60,000 items from the MHL and 148,000-plus items from the GPO are now discoverable via the DPLA.

The MHL provides digital rare books, serials, audio and video recordings, and other items related to the history of medicine, public health, biomedical sciences, and popular medicine from 1235 to 2014. Its collection is stored in the Internet Archive. The GPO’s items come from its Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP), which is composed of records such as the federal budget, as well as laws, federal regulations, and congressional hearings.

ALA and CDT Pen Missive on Net Neutrality

The American Library Association (ALA) and the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) issued a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that advocates for strong, enforceable Net Neutrality rules for the preservation of freedom of speech, educational achievements, and economic growth online. The organizations asked the FCC to act quickly to restore Net Neutrality protections.

“We are concerned that the FCC’s original proposal would allow Internet providers to prioritize or degrade Internet traffic—specifically content, services, or applications offered by libraries and educational institutions,” says Courtney Young, ALA’s president. “Libraries, educational institutions, innovators and consumers increasingly operate as both consumers and content creators, and the Commission’s rules must protect both sides of the Internet access equation.”

The enhanced UI centers on helping authors increase the discoverability of their works and helping readers make new connections inside and outside their fields of interest.
