Thomson Reuters' InCites Updates Go Live
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters updated its InCites research evaluation tool. It now includes the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and Essential Science Indicators (ESI) scholarly analysis solutions, which connect seamlessly with InCites across the platform.InCites users can access the 2014 JCR to view visualizations and analysis of journal impact factors that link directly to article-level data. ESI provides data on top research and researchers to help users identify influential individuals, institutions, publications, and more within a specific scientific field. “Now, with the launch of next generation InCites, we are advancing the approach to research evaluation by providing users with the ability to measure each piece of the research equation—at the journal, article, individual, institutional and regional levels,” says Gordon Macomber, managing director of Scientific and Scholarly Research at Thomson Reuters. This InCites update also includes the addition of a flexible and intuitive interface that is designed for users of all levels to conduct research and to do evaluations and benchmarking. Hachette Ebooks Now Available From EBSCO
Hachette Book Group agreed to offer its popular fiction and nonfiction ebooks via EBSCO eBooks and Audiobooks. These titles include works by David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, and Elin Hilderbrand.With this partnership, libraries will be able to acquire in-demand ebooks without paying markups or fees of any kind. EBSCO will include the titles via featured collections such as Popular Adult Fiction, Youth Award Winners, New Releases, and Popular Fiction/Nonfiction. The ebooks are compatible with a variety of mobile devices, including the Kindle Fire. “Patrons can find e-books from top authors while using EBSCO’s comprehensive and powerful discovery experience. Librarians can offer award-winning titles from Hachette in a cost-effective way while increasing the usage and visibility of the library’s entire collection,” says Ken Breen, EBSCO Information Services’ VP of product management. CrossRef and the CDL Partner to Increase Discoverability
CrossRef signed an agreement with the CDL (California Digital Library) that allows library publishers to participate in CrossRef’s scholarly communications hub. Now publishers using the CDL’s EZID digital identifier service can choose to deposit their metadata in CrossRef, which gives them access to CrossRef services such as search and discovery, persistent linking, and text and data mining.“By collaborating, EZID and CrossRef make it easier for everyone to find information about and use services for scholarly content,” says Ed Pentz, CrossRef’s executive director. According to Catherine Mitchell, director of the Access & Publishing Group at the CDL, “The inclusion of our Open Access publications in new discovery services via CrossRef, particularly its metadata feed, will dramatically increase the exposure of the important scholarship published on our platform.” Source: CrossRef
Tribune Media Spins Off Tribune Publishing
Tribune Media completed the spinoff of Tribune Publishing, its media and marketing solutions division, into its own independent company. For an interim period of up to 2 years, Tribune Publishing will continue its commercial and operational arrangements with Tribune Media.Tribune Media’s portfolio of television and digital properties, which includes WGN America, provides news, entertainment, and sports programming. Due to the acquisition of local TV holdings, it is now the largest independent broadcaster in the U.S. It also produces content via Tribune Studios and offers a metadata business via Tribune Digital Ventures (TDV). Tribune Publishing’s portfolio includes 10 daily titles, 60 digital properties, and 150-plus verticals. Additionally, the company operates publications such as the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and Hoy and El Sentinel, the largest Spanish-language newspaper network in the U.S. Source: Tribune Media
Springer Provides Journal Access to Chile's Researchers
Springer Science+Business Media entered into a 5-year renewal agreement with Chile’s Consortium for Scientific Information Access Electronic (CINCEL), which negotiates subscriptions to scientific journals, ebooks, and databases on behalf of its member institutions. This agreement brings Springer’s published research to more than 45 additional institutions, more than twice as many as those specified in previous agreements. Researchers, students, and faculty at all major institutions in Chile can now access the 1,500-plus journals in Springer’s Americas Collection.Springer plans to “explore similar deals with other current and potential Latin American partners,” says Maria Lopes, Springer’s VP of library sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. Wellcome Library and Jisc Will Digitize Historic Medical Books
The Wellcome Library, part of the Wellcome Trust, and Jisc partnered with nine institutions, including six universities, for a 2-year digitization project encompassing 19th-century medical books and pamphlets. The digitized titles, composed of about 15 million pages, will be added to the UK Medical Heritage Library (UK MHL), a digital curation collaborative that provides open access (OA) to historical resources in medicine.“By working closely with the partner institutions to build the UK Medical Heritage Library, we are converting books into searchable data so that users can explore every aspect of 19th-century medicine and develop new insights into this period of unprecedented medical discovery,” says Peter Findlay, Jisc’s digital portfolio manager. Topics covered in the works include consumer health, sports and fitness, food and nutrition, and medical practices. OverDrive Introduces New Features for Holds
OverDrive added two new features that are designed to help patrons borrow in-demand titles from a library’s collection: automatic borrowing and hold suspension.Users now have the option to turn on automatic borrowing for titles they’ve placed on hold so that they can receive items as soon as they become available. This update enables libraries to fill more holds, which will increase circulations for digital items. With the hold suspension option, users can now choose to suspend a hold while still moving up on the waiting list for that item. If a user is close to the top of the waiting list for a popular title but is not yet ready to borrow it (e.g., if he’s still reading another book), he can opt to pause the hold until he’s ready to resume his position on the waiting list.
