Altmetric Enhances Wiley's Journal Program
Wiley agreed to add Altmetric’s article-level metrics data to its journals after a successful 6-month pilot conducted with Wiley Open Access titles. By the end of July, all Wiley journals will be available with data collected and analyzed by Altmetric: article mentions from social media, online reference managers, post-publication peer-review sites, public policy documents, and traditional media.During the pilot, users accessed the new data to judge articles’ overall popularity, find researchers in their chosen fields, and understand articles’ influences on other research. “We’ve seen some really positive feedback so far from users of the Wiley platform, and hope that with this further roll out of the Altmetric data the authors, readers and society partners of all of their journals can gain a better understanding of the wider impact and attention the published research is generating,” says Euan Adie, Altmetric’s founder. Baker & Taylor Integrates Axis 360 API With Polaris ILS
Baker & Taylor announced the integration of its Axis 360 API with Innovative’s Polaris ILS, which is now available to all Polaris ILS customers. This partnership is designed to simplify patrons’ discovery experience and improve digital library administration.“Completing the integration of Axis 360 and Polaris ILS is an important moment that will improve the library experience for our customers and their patrons,” says George Coe, Baker & Taylor’s CEO and president. “[B]y working together, we are making sure the technologies libraries rely on run seamlessly and are easy to use.” Patrons can find Axis 360’s ebooks and e-audiobooks, see real-time availability for items, and check out and place holds on titles, all from within their library’s catalog. E-rate Program Gets Bigger Wi-Fi Budget
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) updated the E-rate Program to allow the addition of more Wi-Fi networks to U.S. schools and libraries. According to the FCC’s plan, which raises E-rate’s Wi-Fi budget by $2 billion, 10 million more students will have access to communication technologies for digital learning in 2015.According to the FCC’s Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the expansion of E-rate accomplishes the following three goals: 1) expanded funding for Wi-Fi networks that will be distributed across the country, with special attention paid to rural and poor districts, 2) more cost-effective spending for E-rate through improved pricing transparency, increased consortia and bulk purchasing, and the enforcement of existing rules, and 3) a streamlined and simplified E-rate application process and better program administration. International Organizations Ask Elsevier to Withdraw TDM Policy
LIBER (Association of European Research Libraries), along with 17 other international library and research organizations, submitted an open letter to Elsevier asking the company to abandon its text and data mining (TDM) policy because it “places unnecessary restrictions on researchers. It limits their ability, and their right, to mine content to which they have legal access.” LIBER’s goal is to remove licensing restrictions on TDM throughout Europe. “We provide constructive alternatives in every instance, and hope to continue advocating for conditions by which TDM can become an increasingly valuable tool for European researchers,” the press release states. There are now more than 40 signatories of the letter, including EBLIDA (European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany, SPARC Europe, and the Wellcome Trust. UNESCO Report Explores Current State of Journalism and the Media
UNESCO released the report “World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development,” which covers topics such as journalists’ safety, media freedom and independence, and gender-based perspectives.Concerns outweighed positive results such as greater diversity in opinions due to the rise of citizen journalism. For example, threats to journalists now extend to online content producers, and women are still under-represented in global newsrooms and as owners and managers of news outlets. Business-related results showed a rise in private media ownership. However, governments can still control the flow of information by directing licenses to friends and allies, says Karin Deutsch Karlekar, who was part of the advisory council for the report. LexisNexis Website Provides Access to Legal Publications
LexisNexis launched the LexisNexis Legal Content Insider website, which aggregates multimedia content about legal ebooks, digital library technology, and print books. This resource provides a one-stop destination for news and information about legal publications.The LexTalk platform that hosts the site is a network of community forums for law librarians and other legal professionals. In addition to a connection with this network, Legal Content Insider includes written articles and video content, links to relevant blogs, and newsfeeds from Law360 and Mealey’s Daily News Service. Spotlight sections highlight news, links, and information on specific practice areas such as intellectual property (IP) law and banking compliance. Source: LexisNexis
