Interactive U.S. Map Shows Patron Demographics
CIVICTechnologies released the CommunityConnect Interactive Map, a free market segmentation tool that shows U.S. public libraries the demographics of their service areas. The map uses 2010 census and market segmentation data to display visualizations for most libraries, concentrating on user types such as adult learners, low-income families that include young children, and online patrons. Data for each segment includes population, age, income, race, and education level. “With today’s tight library budgets it is more critical than ever for libraries to make data-driven, customer-centric decisions,” says Marc Futterman, CIVICTechnologies’ president and CEO. “With this information they are in a better position to make the right decisions across a range of service domains such as customer development, collections, programs, marketing, outreach, technology, and facilities.” Source: CIVICTechnologies
Library Publishing Coalition Formally Debuts
The LPC (Library Publishing Coalition) had its official launch as an independent, community-led membership association with the goals of furthering the interests of library publishers and supporting a range of publishing practices. Academic and research libraries in the U.S. and Canada are now invited to join. Member libraries can collaborate on projects, share their knowledge, and network with libraries and publishers (especially university presses). They can also vote in LPC board elections, serve in LPC leadership positions, receive members-only emails, and receive special registration prices for LPC events, among other benefits. The LPC operates as an affiliated community of the nonprofit Educopia Institute, which helps libraries and cultural memory institutions advance shared information systems and infrastructures and create new means of digital preservation. Infotrieve Develops Text-Mining Solution
Infotrieve completed a pilot project with help from biopharmaceutical company UCB that included the successful implementation of a beta text-mining solution. The solution leverages the capabilities of Infotrieve’s Mobile Library.“Working closely with Infotrieve and some of our main publishers gave us an opportunity to understand some of the common challenges that researchers face and evolve a solution,” says Andrew Clark, UCB’s associate director of global information and competitive intelligence services. Infotrieve’s goal was to develop a standardized, copyright-compliant, and user-friendly solution for cloud-based text mining of full-text articles from multiple publishers. Pilot participants used Mobile Library’s search capabilities, as well as its content and rights management tools, to search for articles, create a research set, and refine the results to identify articles as being under subscription, available for purchase, or suitable for text mining. Europe PMC Gains New OA Research
WHO (World Health Organization) announced an open access (OA) policy in January 2014 that now applies to all WHO research published in external books and journals. All articles published by WHO staff members or WHO funding recipients must appear in an OA or hybrid-OA journal that has a standard Creative Commons license or deposits the content in Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) within 12 months of its official publication date.“WHO’s open access policy is central to our commitment to universal access to information. Europe PMC will provide the platform for researchers to freely access and reuse WHO-authored and WHO-funded research, for the benefit of global health,” says Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO’s assistant director-general of health systems and innovation. With the adoption of its OA policy, WHO became the 26th funding member of Europe PMC, which provides free access to almost 3 million full-text biomedical research articles. Source: BioMed Central
Reed Tech Strengthens Its IP Solutions
Reed Tech, part of LexisNexis, acquired PatentCore, a provider of online information solutions that developed the LexisNexis PatentAdvisor suite of patent analytics tools. The agreement is designed to enhance LexisNexis’ intellectual property (IP) services and help its customers engage in more strategic patent prosecution and management.“Our relationship with PatentCore has helped us integrate more dynamic patent analytics capabilities into a strong base of IP products and services available through LexisNexis,” says Samuel Hardman, Reed Tech’s president. “PatentAdvisor offers highly valuable analytical and statistical insights on patent prosecution and portfolio management that are unique in the marketplace.” Source: Reed Tech
Axios Systems Streamlines IT Service Management
Axios Systems partnered with Meyer Werft to offer the shipbuilding company streamlined IT service management (ITSM) processes and operations through Axios’ assyst ITSM software solution.assyst helps large enterprises with quick, efficient, and cost-effective delivery and support for IT services, as well as with ITSM best practices and IT asset management (ITAM), governance, and standardization. Axios will offer Meyer Werft initial use of assyst for incident management and request management. After a successful rollout for these processes, the companies plan to include further aspects of the software in Meyer Werft’s IT department, eventually employing it companywide. VitalSource Bookshelf Maintains Accessibility Standards
Vital Source Technologies, Inc., Ingram Content Group’s etextbook solution, updated the accessibility features for its VitalSource Bookshelf platform. The company also agreed to provide an updated and independently reviewed Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) for each Bookshelf platform that documents its conformance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.Vital Source Technologies conducts accessibility conformance testing on all versions of Bookshelf: the offline platform for Windows and Mac, the browser-based online offering, and the mobile platform for iOS and Android devices.
