EBSCO and Infotrieve Combine Solutions
EBSCO Information Services partnered with Infotrieve so their mutual customers can use a single platform for searching, econtent access, rights management, and document delivery. Infotrieve’s Mobile Library solution offers access, management, and delivery, while EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) provides search capabilities.The partnership increases customers’ access to content: On Mobile Library, users will be able to search EDS’s metadata alongside Infotrieve’s 60 million-plus citations. Customers who do not have existing subscriptions to content from these services can use Mobile Library’s document delivery system to get what they need. Source: EBSCO Information Services
Innovative Acquires VTLS
Innovative will give customers a new level of product development and support with its acquisition of library automation solutions provider VTLS. VTLS’ Virtua, VITAL, Chamo, and other products will be rebranded to include VTLS in their names, and Innovative will incorporate VTLS’ consulting and support expertise into its own corporate resources.The companies will integrate under the leadership of Kim Massana, Innovative’s CEO, with VTLS’ president and CEO Vinod Chachra appointed VP of global expansion. HathiTrust Dataset Analyzes Page-Level Features
The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) released the alpha version of a new dataset of page-level features (notable or informative text characteristics) extracted from HathiTrust’s original, scanned representations of public domain volumes.Extracted features include occurrences of terms as parts of speech, term-frequency counts, and line and sentence counts on each page of text, with a total of more than 67 million pages. Pages are broken into header, body, and footer sections so they can be analyzed at scale. The HTRC welcomes feedback on how the dataset can help researchers. Source: HathiTrust
Gale Virtual Reference Library Adds Wiley Ebooks
Gale, part of Cengage Learning, added 400-plus ebooks from Wiley to its Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL).These monographs cover topics such as business and economics, medicine, and computer science, as well as about 180 subjects in the For Dummies series. Gale aims to expand its STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) ebook offerings with these new titles. Gale combines the reference content from its publisher partners with multimedia such as videos to offer researchers a broad platform of support. Source: Cengage Learning
Equity Investment Boosts HighWire Press Initiatives
HighWire Press, an auxiliary unit of Stanford University Libraries, received an equity investment from Accel-KKR that will support its strategic growth initiatives and its digital innovations for internet-based publishing.HighWire Press’ business will now be able to operate as a stand-alone enterprise, with Accel-KKR taking a majority stake in the company and Stanford University maintaining a minority stake. Michael A. Keller, HighWire Press’ publisher, will represent Stanford on the HighWire Press board of directors, and HighWire Press’ managing director Thomas J. Rump will become HighWire Press’ CEO. “By partnering with Accel-KKR, HighWire will have the opportunity to leverage new resources to achieve an even greater impact on the delivery of scholarly information and thus on the rate of discovery of knowledge,” says Keller. “In order to continue to expand our rapid response to new technologies, innovative developments and the growing needs of our customers, an influx of new capital was necessary.” Source: HighWire Press
ProQuest Gains Texas Newspaper Archive
ProQuest added the digital archive of the daily Austin American-Statesman newspaper to its ProQuest Historical Newspapers collection. Researchers now have access to primary sources about Texas and the Southwest from 1871 through the 1900s.The newspaper covers the political, economic, cultural, and social landscape of the region. Its full-text, searchable content offers reporting on topics such as the development of Austin as a railroad hub and the founding of the University of Texas, as well as advertisements, obituaries, editorials, cartoons, etc. Source: ProQuest
LexisNexis Updates E-Discovery Tool
LexisNexis rolled out version 1.6 of LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer, its data-reducing tool that helps lower e-discovery costs by using near-duplicate document analysis and email threading functionality.Document analysis identifies nearly identical documents and email chains early in the e-discovery process, and email threading shows emails, threads, and attachments in groups so users do not have to review that content individually. LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer filters out about 85% of irrelevant data by searching and indexing it at the source location instead of using the entire dataset. Source: LexisNexis
