Lucidea Will Launch Knowledge Management Solution
Lucidea announced the upcoming release of SydneyEnterprise, its newest library automation system. This knowledge management (KM) tool is the first library solution created using the LucideaCoreKM technology. Instead of adding KM functionality to an existing product, Lucidea built it into SydneyEnterprise, making the solution scalable, flexible, and multifunctional so librarians can deliver a fully integrated KM platform. SydneyEnterprise is Lucidea’s flagship ILS for special libraries.According to Lucidea, using KM technology gives libraries a competitive advantage because it accelerates idea generation and product and service development. YBP and JSTOR Collaborate on Purchase Options
YBP Library Services, the academic division of Baker & Taylor, partnered with Books at JSTOR so librarians can make JSTOR purchases using YBP’s GOBI3 acquisition and collection management interface.Libraries can opt to receive new title notifications from GOBI3 or request automatic title delivery to JSTOR via YBP’s eApproval program. Customer feedback prompted YBP to integrate JSTOR purchasing into the existing GOBI3 workflow. JSTOR’s demand-driven acquisition program will be added to its fulfillment options at a later date. Thomson Reuters Provides New Continuing Education Package
Thomson Reuters introduced its subscription-based, online Checkpoint Learning Corporate Advancement Package. It provides corporate tax and accounting professionals with a complete training and continuing education solution.Subscribers have access to webinars, online courses, and continuing education tracking that includes compliance-tracking tools, a personalized learning dashboard, and certificate storage. “The Checkpoint Learning Corporate Advancement Package equips subscribers with the necessary tools to understand complex issues and stay abreast of the latest tax and accounting developments while also having a broad selection of finance, technology, and management courses available in a fixed-priced, unlimited-use package,” says Ken Koskay, SVP of learning solutions in the Tax & Accounting business of Thomson Reuters. NPG and IECAS Plan New OA Journal
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) teamed up with the Institute of Electronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) to launch an online open access (OA) journal beginning publication in March 2015. Microsystems & Nanoengineering will be available at nature.com, and NPG will accept submissions of original research articles and reviews toward the end of the year.The journal will cover design, fabrication, characterization, and other topics related to micro and nano electro mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), with all articles becoming freely available on publication. Yi-Rong Wu will serve as editor-in-chief. Source: Nature Publishing Group
Knowledge Unlatched Rolls Out Pilot Results
Knowledge Unlatched released a preliminary report on its first pilot, which summarizes the results in PDF and MARCXML files available as individual downloads. Contents include the pilot’s objectives, the creation and marketing of the pilot collection, and key outcomes. Its mission was to create a sustainable route to open access (OA) for specialist scholarly books by working with libraries and publishers to share the costs of OA.According to the progress summary, the pilot “brought together stakeholders from every part of the monograph ecosystem in order to develop workflows, test key assumptions about the ways in which libraries and publishers might work together, and to ‘unlatch’ a Pilot Collection.” Knowledge Unlatched will release a more detailed report sometime in the next few months. BiblioBoard and Library Journal Launch Ebook Discovery Service
BiblioBoard worked with Library Journal (LJ) to create SELF-e, an ebook discovery service that helps public library patrons find works by self-published authors.Authors can use SELF-e’s free submission portal to submit their ebooks, which LJ evaluates and selects on a rolling basis for curated genre collections in participating libraries, with a planned first release early next year. Whether or not they are chosen for the LJ collections, authors can use SELF-e to include their ebooks in statewide public library collections featuring other local authors. “We didn’t want to be another fee-based review service for self-published titles, as that’s not providing a solution to authors or libraries. We’ve been looking for a way to connect the two for their common audience, the reader,” says Ian Singer, LJ’s publisher. Source: BiblioBoard
EBSCO Database Offers Resources for Military Members
EBSCO Information Services’ new Military Transition Support Center is a resource that families and members of the military can use during their transition to civilian life. By aggregating about 2,000 full-text magazines, journals, and trade publications; 20-plus ebooks; and about 250 videos, EBSCO created a database that supports military members as they look for information on subjects such as employment, education, personal financial management, and family wellness.Military and government libraries can offer the resources in the support center as part of formal or informal transition support programs or as a reference tool for individual users. Topics were chosen with input from military librarians, and the user interface is organized by topic for simplified searching. Source: EBSCO Information Services
