The Library Corporation Adds E-Resources Integration
The Library Corporation (TLC) updated its LS2 PAC, LS2 Kids, and LS2 Mobile ILS modules with full catalog integration of e-resources from OverDrive and Axis 360, so that patrons can download ebooks and other digital media to their mobile devices directly from the library’s catalog.Last year, TLC initiated the integration of OverDrive and Axis 360 with its LS2 PAC catalog for teens and adults. Now, patrons of any age can access digital content using TLC’s updated LS2 offerings. LS2 Kids has a colorful, intuitive display to help children explore the catalog, and LS2 PAC is a powerful search tool with built-in mobile functionality. Source: The Library Corporation
EBSCO Adds Medical Ebook Collections
EBSCO Information Services rolled out three new Medical Featured Collections on its EBSCO eBooks and Audiobooks platform that libraries can purchase individually or as a collection:- Doody’s Core Titles 2014 Frontlist aggregates titles featured in the medical book review service Doody’s, which helps medical libraries and institutions purchase relevant titles. Reviewers include medical librarians and content specialists whose submissions are added to Doody’s annual list of core titles.
- Doody’s 4- and 5-Star Reviewed Titles 2014 comprises titles rated with four or five stars by Doody’s Review Service (DRS). DRS members examine titles each month for potential inclusion in each year’s DRS collection. More titles will be added as they become eligible for this year’s collection.
- American Journal of Nursing 2013 Books of the Year is a compilation of 25 titles given the 2013 Best Book of the Year Award by The American Journal of Nursing. These titles come from several publishers and represent a variety of disciplines, including nursing research and community and public health.

LexisNexis Boosts Telematics Offerings
LexisNexis acquired Wunelli, a U.K.-based telematics data services company, to expand its global usage-based insurance (UBI) solutions. Insurers will now be able to use telematics data to reduce risk exposure, make informed and time-efficient decisions, and enhance the UBI consumer experience.LexisNexis customers expressed a need for more telematics solutions for the auto insurance market, and Wunelli’s expertise, scores, solutions, and data assets give them greater ROI and faster speed to market, says Bill Madison, LexisNexis’ CEO, Insurance for the risk solutions business of LexisNexis. Combining LexisNexis’ and Wunelli’s datasets will create one of the largest provider-held insurance telematics databases in the world. Source: LexisNexis
TRAC Co-Directors File Complaint Against ICE
The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University announced that its co-directors (Susan B. Long and David Burnham) filed a suit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Administrative Practices Act (APA), and administrative rules from both agencies.In their complaint document, Long and Burnham dispute ICE’s claim that when using ICE’s data to research immigration laws, they are doing so to collect a profit. They argue that TRAC provides news organizations, academic groups, and the government with data about immigration enforcement on its website for noncommercial purposes only. Springer Adopts Updating Service for Articles
Springer Science+Business Media announced that it will implement CrossMark, a service from the CrossRef organization that will identify updates to forthcoming Springer journal articles.This multipublisher service helps readers know which version of published content is the authoritative source by adding the CrossMark logo on an article to explain its current status and publication-record information. The SpringerLink platform will now include a CrossMark window on articles’ HTML pages that describes updates to the content and provides bibliographic metadata. Columbia Rare Book Library Augments Journalism Collection
The Rare Book & Manuscript Library (RBML) at the Columbia University Libraries/Information Services acquired the papers of Rafael Steinberg, an author and foreign correspondent who reported on U.S. foreign relations during the Cold War.A writer for Newsweek, The Washington Post, and other publications, he also penned nine books on topics such as East Asia. The RBML obtained his correspondence, story drafts, reporting notebooks, audio interviews, and other research items, which were collected to form 31 linear feet of materials. This acquisition adds to the RBML’s existing repositories on the history of journalism and expands research sources on U.S. foreign relations, American journalism, and Asian history. Metafilter to Downsize Staff
Metafilter will lay off three of its moderators at the end of May. Founder Matthew Haughey explains, in a blog post, that a financial downturn during the past 18 months meant that staff members would need to be cut “to make up for budget shortfalls” while the company operates at a significant loss. Haughey notes that Metafilter members can expect email response times to increase, borderline comments to be deleted, and reliance on the Metafilter community to flag items and model good behavior. “In general, we’re going to be trying different things out over time with the goal of letting us continue to maintain and support the site and community as best as possible with less overall moderator presence,” he writes.
