ProQuest Acquires Pi2
ProQuest announced its acquisition of the U.K.-based Pi2, which provides information and literature management to biopharmaceutical companies. By aligning Pi2’s systems with the Dialog service, ProQuest can create a single solution for pharmacovigilance and streamline the drug safety workflow.“ProQuest Dialog and Pi2 have an existing partnership and common customers, who have expressed interest in tighter integration between these tools,” says Tim Wahlberg, Dialog’s SVP and general manager. To achieve this integration, pharmaceutical companies that use Dialog to monitor scientific literature for drug and therapy news can use Pi2’s Drug Safety Triager to automate the review, categorization, and indexing of their alert results. Their results flow into the Pi2 PinPoint Product Literature Database, which houses them in a customized repository. Source: ProQuest
Preservica Updates Its Digital Preservation Platform
Preservica rolled out version 5.0 of its digital preservation platform for all three of its editions: Cloud, Standard, and Enterprise. New features include public access and discovery, allowing organizations to share their digital archives from a customizable Universal Access module. This web-based interface module allows Preservica users to search, view, and download digital content on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.Version 5.0 also adds storage policies that allow collection splitting between the Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier storage services; archive synchronization to local servers; and a management dashboard that records collection size, growth rate, and file formats used. GPO's Annual Report Goes Public
The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) published its annual report for FY 2013. The report, transmitted to Congress by public printer Davita Vance-Cooks, describes the GPO’s achievements such as a positive net income and digital improvements to GPO products and services.“In FY 2013, GPO was confronted with unusual fiscal challenges as a result of sequestration and preparations for a Government shutdown,” says Vance-Cooks. “In response, we made a concerted effort to control spending while continuing to meet the information needs of Congress, Federal agencies, and the public.”
The GPO’s highlights from the past year include new apps, expanded access to U.S. House of Representatives bill summaries, and an upgraded online bookstore for GPO titles. It also produced materials for the 2013 presidential inauguration. Source: U.S. Government Printing Office
Gale's New Technology Boosts Research Relevance
Gale, part of Cengage Learning, launched a new technology that links current newspaper, magazine, and journal articles with contextual references from within ebooks on Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL). This InterLink technology connects Gale’s resources via document-level hyperlinking so researchers can find content without knowing a specific source. InterLink’s cross-searching leverages Gale’s subject indexing and results ranking algorithms, facilitating relevant discovery. It also helps libraries by driving usage of their GVRL ebook collections.“This integrated and intelligent cross-search will help users thrive in today’s education landscape, and our customers agree. In a recent survey, this enhancement was among the most requested by librarians and thought to deliver the highest value to users,” says Gale VP and general manager Jim Draper. OCLC Adds Art History Resources to WorldCat
OCLC introduced the Art Discovery Group Catalogue to bring together information from global art libraries into a single, searchable database in WorldCat. WorldCat users can also search for art library items alongside additional online journals and databases.artlibraries.net, an international, specialized meta catalog of about 13 million art history records, coordinated the project with OCLC as part of the Future of Art Bibliography (FAB) initiative. Search limits include American Art Libraries, Australian Art Libraries, and Swiss Art Libraries. Advanced search features allow searching by date range, intended audience, content type, and more. “The Art Discovery Group Catalogue is the best place to start for art-related content discovery,” says Geert-Jan Koot, head of the Rijksmuseum’s Research Library in Amsterdam. “Art historians want a unified, focused, and reliable service to provide comprehensive research findings and pinpoint discovery of individual items in the world’s leading art libraries.” Source: OCLC
SAGE Debuts Research Methods Cases Collection
SAGE Publications launched the SAGE Research Methods Cases collection of social research case studies. These studies were specially commissioned and designed to explain abstract methodological concepts in practice, especially in the social and behavioral sciences.International college and university researchers, students, and methods instructors can access about 300 studies that match course content and complement theoretical understanding. They can search by discipline topic, academic level, and the type of method used. Each study features learning objectives, exercises, discussion questions, and other resources. Ensim's Cloud Environments Solution Gets Upgrade
Ensim released an updated end-to-end automation and management solution: IaaS Manager 3.0 (infrastructure as a service) for VMware, now with three-step virtual machine (VM) creation, network automation, and other enhancements. Powered by the Ensim Automation Suite, it helps service providers and enterprises with public, private, and hybrid cloud environments and supports deployments on a variety of infrastructure solutions.IaaS Manager uses a single platform that includes marketplace, service catalog, ordering, administration, and billing functions. “Ensim’s IaaS Manager allows service providers and enterprises to leverage the combination of agility and control that our leading VMware solutions offer, and to incorporate the front and back-end functionalities necessary to commercialize the delivery of IT services via the cloud,” according to Sanjay Katyal, VP of global strategic alliances at VMware.
