Ex Libris Group launched the Ex Libris Developer Network, which gives developers and IT professionals an open environment to experiment with applications and extensions to Ex Libris solutions. The network is available to anyone, not just Ex Libris’ customers, and is a response to feedback from Ex Libris’ existing developer community.

Sections on the network’s website include Docs (API documentation and technical guides), Tech Blog (advice, guidance, and best practices from Ex Libris development team members), Code & Apps (links to complete code projects), Forum (for sharing ideas, questions, and answers about Ex Libris APIs), and Dashboard (a tool for managing projects and viewing analytics).

“Harnessing the open interfaces of Alma, Primo, and other Ex Libris solutions, a library can integrate its systems with other campus systems—thereby delivering essential services to students and faculty and demonstrating the library’s value to the institution it serves,” says Ex Libris president and CEO Matti Shem Tov.

Caringo Rolls Out CloudScaler 3 and a Verification Program

Caringo, a storage software provider, made two enhancements to its product portfolio: version 3 of its CloudScaler cloud storage service and a new application verification program.

CloudScaler, in combination with CAStor software, helps enterprises and service providers manage and expand their public or private cloud storage. New features in version 3 include flexible support for identity management systems, streamlined deployment, and the ability to plug in to any management, billing, or cloud orchestration solution using an API.

The verification program allows anyone in the cloud community to verify interoperability with CloudScaler for applications that support Amazon’s S3 API. Caringo gives interested users a free testing account to verify interoperability, and once they’re verified and approved, they can run any S3 application and use Caringo’s object storage behind their firewall to maintain control, security, and performance.

“In working with some of the world’s largest enterprises and service providers on private and public cloud storage deployments, there was a clear need for storage software that can plug into various management solutions on the back-end and also plug into various applications on the front-end,” according to Mark Goros, Caringo’s CEO and founder. Caringo helps solve these problems “by making both service management and deployment easier for IT administrators and use of the service easier for their end users.”

WorldCat Works Descriptions Are Now Available as Linked Data

OCLC took its next step in working with linked data by announcing the production release of WorldCat Works, the first in a series of WorldCat linked data releases.

OCLC staff members created authoritative descriptions for 197 million WorldCat bibliographic records that brought together multiple manifestations of a work under one entity that includes author, title, subjects, and other descriptors, as well as links to record-level descriptions already shared in WorldCat linked data. This project helps library collections become more discoverable through a variety of websites and web services such as Google, Wikipedia, and social networks.

“Bibliographic data stored in traditional record formats has reached its limits of efficiency and utility,” says Richard Wallis, OCLC technology evangelist. “New technologies, influenced by the Web, now enable us to move toward managing WorldCat data as entities—such as ‘Works,’ ‘People,’ ‘Places’ and more—as part of the global Web of data.”
