KeepTool Repackages Database Programs

KeepTool Light helps end users write and run queries and do analysis reports so they don’t need to involve developers in simple tasks.

KeepTool Professional facilitates Oracle application development and administration with the Hora tool and other automation tools for generating documents and using an SQL (structured query language) editor.

KeepTool Enterprise offers the tools included in KeepTool Professional plus additional tools for Oracle database comparison, such as DB Compare, a new product that determines if test and production databases have the same structure; ER Diagrammer for graphic representations of table relationships; and the PL (procedural language)/SQL Debugger, which shows where PL/SQL codes are failing.

HighWire Press Augments Articles With Altmetric Data

Per the agreement, Altmetric data—news, social media, bookmarking, peer-review forums, and so on—can be displayed beside research articles. These “mentions” are assigned a score based on the volume, source, and author of each mention. Individual mentions are clickable, allowing HighWire users to view sources such as news stories, tweets, and blog posts about the corresponding article.

“HighWire and Altmetric have simplified the implementation process to minimize cost barriers across the board,” according to Bill Matthews, HighWire’s director of business development. “This is a logical step in support of our publisher partners and their readers and authors.”

Publishers can contact their HighWire representative to request the addition of Altmetric’s data to their journal articles.

Columbia School of Social Work Adopts OA Resolution

At a Dec. 2, 2013, meeting, faculty and staff voted unanimously to implement the OA resolution. Authors can provide their works to the public by following one of two avenues: SSW faculty can submit work to publicly accessible OA repositories such as PubMed Central, or they can collaborate with the CDRS to upload the work to Columbia’s Academic Commons digital repository.

“The Libraries are eager to continue to work with other Columbia schools and institutes to expand commitment and participation in open access initiatives,” says James G. Neal, VP of information services and university librarian.

Springer Publishes Journal of Nephrology

“We are strongly committed to reaching the widest possible international audience,” says Giovanni Gambaro, the journal’s editor-in-chief. “In order to do so, we sought a publisher with the experience and technological expertise to serve our readers across the globe. We see our journal supporting doctors who treat renal diseases in the nephrological and other clinical settings. We will work to help the Journal of Nephrology connect nephrologists to experts in other medical specialties.”

EBSCO Discovery Service Adds Japanese Ebook Metadata

EDS brings more visibility to Maruzen’s content, which includes subjects such as the humanities, engineering, and medicine. Users can now expand their EDS searches to include Japanese-language content and enhance their library collections.

NPG Opens Archives to French Researchers

ISTEX’s goal is to provide online scientific literature collections in all disciplines to the French community of higher education and scholarship, according to its website. Its current collection has more than 6 million articles from 2,500 journals. The agreement with NPG adds access to the publisher’s full archives from 1869 to 2012, as well as to seven titles in immunology, biology, chemistry, and the neurosciences, totaling about 400,000 articles.

The National Centre of Scientific Research and the French National Research Agency supplied the Ministry of Higher Education and Research with €60 million (about $82 million) in funding for a 3-year partnership. The budget includes €55 million (about $75 million) for acquiring scientific archives and €5 million (about $7 million) to build the platform for hosting the NPG data.

Thomson Reuters Updates SAEGIS Platform

SAEGIS has a collection of trademark screening intelligence from 186 countries. Industrial Designs provides critical information about registered design patents to brand owners. Using the combined service, users can reduce brand risk by comparing their products to more than 9 million designs from 17 countries in the databases and registering their products to defend against design imitation.

“Design is an enormously powerful piece of intellectual property that has historically been very difficult to vet in the trademark clearance process. With our new Industrial Designs solution, there is now a clear-cut, rules-based set of tools to accurately and efficiently search the registered design universe to make certain a brand’s unique look and feel is protected,” says David Brown, managing director of Thomson Reuters’ IP (intellectual property) solutions.
