Next-Generation Web of Science Goes Live

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters updated the Web of Science citation index with next-generation features. It now has an intuitive and user-friendly interface, expanded content, open access (OA) functionality, and open web accessibility (such as links to Google Scholar). The InCites research evaluation tool also received upgrades.

The expanded content includes the addition of the SciELO Citation Index to Web of Science, covering Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the Caribbean. The Chinese Science Citation Database is another new addition, as well as the Korean Journal Database, which joins Web of Science later this year.

The addition of OA indicators on journal articles and the open web links are a “step toward simplifying the scientific search process for researchers who begin in an open environment,” according to the press release.

A2iA Upgrades Mobility Software

A2iA (Artificial Intelligence and Image Analysis) released a new version of A2iA Mobility, its software toolkit for offline mobile data recognition and image analysis on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.

A2iA Mobility helps consumers submit payments, produce identification documents, and capture forms or documents on mobile. “A2iA has always dedicated itself to delivering software that speeds processes, minimizes manual document handling and reduces operating costs,” says Jean-Louis Fages, A2iA’s CEO and co-founder. “With the latest release of A2iA Mobility, we continue to deliver on these principles and allow for emerging mobile check and document processing markets to achieve the same successes we have seen in the U.S.”

New Solutions Boost Cloud Service File Sharing and Backup

Ensim introduced two storage-as-a-service (STaaS) solutions: Ensim File Manager and Ensim Backup Manager. These solutions help cloud service providers give their customers private, secure file storage, sharing, and backup.

Ensim File Manager has enterprise-level security measures that allow service providers to offer web-accessible folder capabilities to customers. Ensim Backup Manager allows for a complete and cost-effective solution that can back up computers and servers on Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems.

“Maintaining customer data and security integrity in service provider datacenters and in country is crucial in today’s security-conscious world. With our latest Storage as a Service Solutions, Ensim enables cloud service providers to accommodate all of their customers’ storage needs under their own platform and with their own brand,” says Dave Wippich, Ensim’s chairman and CEO.

Ensim Automation Suite automates and manages the STaaS solutions, and Microsoft Office tools such as Exchange and SharePoint can be used for deployment.

Government Reforms Intelligence Collection Policies

The White House announced the adoption of reforms for how the government collects intelligence information.

These reforms coincide with the release of Presidential Policy Directive/PPD-28,” a blueprint for dealing with signals intelligence activities in the U.S. and internationally. It reports on new principles for intelligence collection and strengthens the executive branch’s monitoring of activities.

President Obama’s speech at the Department of Justice on Jan. 17 called for intelligence workers, including the National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS), to follow privacy protocols and maintain Americans’ trust. He spoke of “a path forward that we believe should give the American people greater confidence that their rights are being protected, while preserving important tools that keep us safe, and that address significant questions that have been raised overseas,” according to a press release from the White House Office of the Press Secretary.

Other reforms include updates to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (“plac[ing] additional restrictions on the government’s ability to retain, search, and use in criminal cases, communications between Americans and foreign citizens”) and the USA PATRIOT Act (continuing the collection of phone call metadata but “preserv[ing] the capabilities we need without the government holding the data”).
