Innovative Interfaces Enhances Ebook Discovery
Innovative Interfaces announced the completed integration of the 3M Cloud Library into its Encore discovery solution. Librarians from any type of library can now access ebooks from 3M and local print and electronic collections, all from the Encore interface.Encore offers library users social features, faceted search, and relevancy ranking of search results for ebook discovery, as well as the ability to place holds and check out ebooks. The new “check out with Cloud Library” button lets users download titles from the 3M collection. Users can then access their profile to see a list of their checked-out books and ebooks, when each title is due, and the option to return a title early. 3M Library Systems’ cloud-based e-lending service is designed to help libraries increase their ebook circulation when integrated with a library’s ILS. “Seamless integration with a discovery application is a vital part of helping patrons find and enjoy eBooks,” says Tom Mercer, 3M’s digital library marketing manager. Elsevier Introduces Reference Modules on ScienceDirect
Elsevier recently launched Reference Modules on the ScienceDirect full-text database. These collections arrange Elsevier’s scientific reference articles by subject for searching in individual databases. Now researchers can access Elsevier content as it is uploaded to ScienceDirect; there is no waiting period for updated reference works. The Reference Modules contain peer-reviewed articles that are continuously evaluated by an editorial board. Each Module’s board designs the subject hierarchy for searches and time-stamps each article with the most recent review date. The Modules also link new content to relevant journal articles or book chapters already on ScienceDirect. “This launch assures that researchers can start exploring scientific topics with authoritative, current content and quickly discover relevant information in related fields,” says Suzanne BeDell, managing director of science and technology books at Elsevier. Reference Modules “provide innovations that address the needs of researchers and content that drives better research outcomes,” according to BeDell. The introductory Modules are Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences and Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering. The Wall Street Journal and AllThingsD Part Ways
Dow Jones & Co.’s The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) cut ties with AllThingsD.com, a technology news website launched by Dow Jones in 2007. As part of the separation, WSJ’s technology columnist Walt Mossberg will resign at the end of 2013 when the partnership’s contract expires.The decision not to renew the partnership was mutual, according to Gerard Baker, WSJ editor-in-chief. Mossberg, who has been writing a Personal Technology column for WSJ since 1991, founded AllThingsD as a business inside the WSJ framework, but now wishes to “move to a more independent structure.” AllThingsD co-founder Kara Swisher, a former WSJ columnist, will work with Mossberg to secure a new partnership for the website. Royal Society of Chemistry Acquires MarinLit Database
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) completed its acquisition of MarinLit, a cloud-based marine natural product (MNP) database designed to help scientists find a starting point for MNP research.John Blunt, Murray Munro, and others at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand developed MarinLit 25 years ago as a support system for chemists. MarinLit offers bibliographic data on MNP literature and a collection of terms that are searchable individually or in various combinations. Blunt and Munro felt it was “time to pass over the responsibility” of the database, says Munro. They agreed to RSC’s offer of acquisition based on the society’s “strengths in developing web-based knowledge delivery systems.” MarinLit is a “strategic fit with our current activities and natural product research,” such as the Natural Product Reports journal, according to David James, RSC executive director of strategic innovation. UPSO Rolls Out New Content
University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO) updated its collection with more than 500 new titles from its 14 university press partners. Two additional partner publishers will soon join UPSO's ranks: Yale University Press this month, and The University Press of Mississippi in March 2014.UPSO currently offers more than 13,000 books in 28 subject areas to scholars, teachers, and students in universities and academic libraries. The new titles are featured in 20-plus subject areas, including Classical Studies, Economics and Finance, History, and Religion. APA Debuts PsycNET Mobile App
The American Psychological Association (APA) introduced APA PsycNET Mobile, its free app for iOS and Android devices. The app retains the full functionality of the PsycNET database; subscribers can search by keyword, title, or author to access text-based and ebook content.Key features include the Citation Finder, which pinpoints specific references, and the ability to export results to citation management tools. Users can also filter results by year or age group, save search parameters for future searches, and email search results. Subscribers who have full-text access can download full-text PDFs of any documents in the database to their mobile devices. Source: American Psychological Association
