Brill Adopts OA Model for Books
Brill, a Netherlands-based publisher in the humanities, social sciences, international law, and biology fields, is now publishing open access (OA) books.
The OA program includes hybrid journals, fully OA journals, and edited books and monographs. Using Brill Open, authors can opt in to OA in exchange for a Publication Charge, which ranges from $1,700 for a journal article to $6,550 for a book. The website notes that Brill Open “supports the gradual conversion to the Open Access model.”
Brill uses a Creative Commons license for the Brill Online Books and Journals platform that includes the full text of more than 175,000 chapters and articles. Authors can keep the copyright on their work, but they are required to pay the Publication Charge to have their published OA book or journal listed on Brill Online.
Thomson Reuters Elite Releases Business Development Premier
Thomson Reuters Elite, a flagship brand of Thomson Reuters, recently released a new cloud-based platform called Business Development Premier. It uses customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise relationship management (ERM) tools to analyze company and competitive intelligence data so Elite users can turn their focus to business strategy instead of data aggregation.
“In creating Business Development Premier, our intention is to establish the most advanced business development platform possible and target it directly at addressing the issues so keenly felt by law firms,” says Eric Sugden, CTO.
Business Development Premier includes plenty of features: real-time insights with a mobile option, quick automation that finds and deduplicates client data, ERM technology that completes client profiles efficiently, and marketing campaign management. “In short, it gives you the keys to unlock the power of information, drive successful marketing and business development initiatives, and produce immediate ROI for your firm,” according to the platform’s website. Business Development Premier is designed to improve traditional CRM approaches using ERM to boost data acquisition.
Thomson Reuters Elite offers software solutions to law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies, ranging from business development to financial management. “For the first time, law firm leaders and marketing teams have an integrated tool that manages strategic business development information and work streams, adding a powerful new dimension to their business development activities,” says Sugden.

SwetsWise Releases Platform Enhancements
Swets rolled out enhancements to the SwetsWise information management platform and SwetsWise Online Content, its online resource aggregation interface.
SwetsWise users now have access to upgraded reporting methods and redirect capabilities, as well as to an improved notification system for title status edits, according to the website.
SwetsWise Online Content has more than 42 million references and links to 14,500-plus journals that allow users to view their entire digital collections regardless of the original publisher or platform. Specific changes to the interface include an updated alert management system, the addition of an alphabetical list of users, and more effective filtering capabilities.
Case Logistix 6.0 Goes Live
Thomson Reuters’ Litigation Technology and Services introduced Case Logistix 6.0, the newest version of its organizational software. This new software is designed to help lawyers and legal researchers review documents and analyze metrics while doing ediscovery research.
A host of new features have been added to complement the product’s existing tools:
- The new user interface has a customizable, more intuitive design.
- There is now a Quick Search function, and searches can be saved, shared, and combined with other queries.
- The addition of OCR (optical character recognition) lets users search text.
- New analytics tools such as concept clustering, email threading, and near-duplicate document analysis assist in document review.
- The navigation tool now saves session history so users can go back and view earlier usage.
“The improvements in Case Logistix 6.0 mean faster, more efficient and accurate document review,” says Kristin Nimsger, managing director and general manager of practice technology and services. “Case Logistix 6.0 eases the work, reduces the costs and mitigates the risks of e-discovery”; it also integrates with other tools such as Case Notebook and Drafting Assistant, according to Nimsger.

EBSCO Acquires the British Education Index
EBSCO Information Services acquired the article records of the British Education Index (BEI), a database featuring more than 180,000 education journal records from the U.K. Adding BEI records will naturally complement two of EBSCO’s databases: Education Research Complete and Education Resource Information Center, says Mark Herrick, EBSCO senior vice president of business development and strategy.
The BEI, part of the University of Leeds Library, indexes articles that focus on education and education-themed theses. Its stated mission is to “support the professional study of education by facilitating the identification and use of specific reading matter and event-related information,” according to its website.
BEI records contain journal information dating from 1976 that is also accessible via ProQuest Dialog. The BEI is searchable using the British Education Thesaurus (a collection of about 8,000 terms) or by author, subject term, word, or phrase.

American Indian Histories and Cultures Digital Archive Debuts
The Newberry research library in Chicago and publisher Adam Matthew jointly created the American Indian Histories and Cultures digital archive, which launched recently as part of the ongoing partnership between the two institutions. The Newberry’s Edward E. Ayer Collection was the exclusive source of content for the new archive.
Adam Matthew, a SAGE Publications company, publishes historical primary sources in collaboration with libraries and other memory institutions to create digital social science and humanities collections. American Indian Histories and Cultures is available on Adam Matthew’s website; researchers can download a sample list of contents and sign up for a free trial on the site.
The archive highlights sources from the first European contacts with American Indians to the civil rights era, including manuscripts of treaties and speeches, newspapers from the 1960s–1990s, artwork, maps, and photos. Key among the features are interactive data maps, a detailed chronology, and contextual essays.
American Indian Histories and Cultures is a companion collection to The Newberry and Adam Matthew’s previous archive The American West, which uses sources from The Newberry’s Everett D. Graff Collection and is cross-searchable with the new archive.

New Program Offers Education Credits to Working Youth
Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE) and Cengage Learning’s ed2go have partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in a special program. This Commitment to Action is a 2-year scholarship program that encourages young adults now working in the retail and hospitality industries to complete their high-school equivalency.
Career Online High School, an accredited, online education initiative that ed2go and SHCOE created in 2012, will offer young employees an 18-credit high-school degree and a career certificate. Under the terms of the CGI partnership agreement, Career Online High School “will identify four employers in key sectors that commonly recruit and hire employees lacking a high school education.”
Retail Customer Service Skills and Food & Customer Service Skills are two available career certificates, according to Howard Liebman, SHCOE CEO and superintendent. “Our initial goal is to enroll 200 to 400 new students,” he says.
Former president Bill Clinton founded CGI in 2005 as a network of leaders who work together to solve global problems, including education-level differences in certain industries. This is one such issue that ed2go and SHCOE want to help solve. ed2go provides adults with continuing education classes from its 2,100-member institutional network; SHCOE is an accredited, career-based online school district for students worldwide.
SHCOE and ed2go are responsible for training the employers in the program and helping students access Career Online High School. Students will have access to academic coaches to guide them through their coursework.
“At a time when millions of jobs are going unfilled because employers can’t find people with the right skills, we believe this innovative program can make a huge and lasting impact,” says Ron Stefanski, ed2go’s chief business development officer.
