New Initiative to Help Authors Increase Research Impact
Kudos, a startup that provides a cross-publisher service to help researchers maximize the usage and impact of published articles, announced the launch of a pilot phase in which it is partnering with Taylor & Francis Group and the Royal Society of Chemistry.“The growing range of article metrics is driving authors to take a greater interest in how easy it is to find, read and cite their work after publication,” says Melinda Kenneway, a publishing consultant who co-founded Kudos with fellow consultants David Sommer and Charlie Rapple. “But at the moment, authors are limited in what they can do to help improve the discoverability and readership of their work, and this is where Kudos will help.”
The need for Kudos arises from developments in global academic and research policies that will increasingly see evolving interpretations of "impact" used to assess researcher excellence. Publishers already invest editorial, marketing, and technological expertise in making research articles discoverable and useful, and now Kudos will further support this by helping leverage the expertise and connections of researchers themselves to further drive visibility and usage. Kudos aims to provide a highly automated, scalable service to help researchers and their institutions measure, monitor, and maximize the usage of and citations to their published articles, always linking back to the publishers’ authoritative version. Kudos also aims to broaden access and enable “strategic reading” by assisting authors in articulating the context of their published work, and enriching it with links to related resources. Kudos’ founders will continue in their current consulting roles at TBI Communications Limited (Kenneway and Rapple) and David Sommer Consulting Ltd. (Sommer) while steering the project’s pilot phase. “Kudos’ pilot period is effectively a research experiment,” says Sommer. “At this stage, we have a range of ideas that may help researchers and their institutions increase the readership and impact of their published articles. The pilot phase allows us to test and measure the effectiveness of these ideas with real data and authors, to help us shape the ongoing development of the Kudos service.”

OCLC Working With Libraries to Test Record Management Functionality
OCLC is working with 13 libraries on three continents to beta test OCLC WorldShare Metadata Record Manager, which offers new record management functionality to enhance a library’s ability to catalog its collections, including electronic, digital, and physical materials. It will be available to libraries using WorldShare Management Services WMS) beginning in September 2013. In 2014, Record Manager will be available to all OCLC cataloging members using WMS, alternative cloud-based services, or traditional integrated library systems.OCLC began working with a group of academic, public, and special libraries in the U.S. earlier this year to test Record Manager functionality. Libraries in the U.K., Australia, and Spain recently joined the pilot. Cataloging librarians at the participating libraries are using Record Manager to create new WorldCat records, enrich existing records, maintain WorldCat holdings data, and customize local bibliographic data. This brings with it flexibility and improvements to the way libraries describe and profile the unique resources that they hold. In May, pilot participants began testing functionality to customize local holdings records. WorldShare Metadata is a core part of OCLC’s strategy of library collaboration to provide integrated solutions to support the complete library management workflow, including selection, acquisition, metadata, license management, discovery, resource sharing, and analytics. OCLC is developing Record Manager as a complement to WorldShare Metadata Collection Manager, used to automatically update the metadata and access details for collections of electronic resources. These new WorldShare Metadata applications will be enhanced in phases over the next few years and provide a complete metadata management solution for licensed, digital, and physical resources across multiple formats. Ingram Expands Publisher Services With Life Print Program
Ingram Content Group, Inc. announced the launch of its Life Print program, a comprehensive solution for publishers to manage the complete life cycle of print books. It gives publishers the flexibility to manage all frontlist, backlist, and long tail titles from one source, using one file and one order process. The full-service program centralizes title management and integrates flexible costs with service levels.Publishers can manufacture books in any quantity, from a single copy to a high-volume print run, regardless of where a book is in its life cycle. The program integrates print on demand with Ingram’s high-volume, offset book printing affiliates to provide a seamless solution with a simple pricing structure. Publishers have the option to select expedited or standard service levels to quickly adjust to changes in demand. The choices available through Ingram’s Life Print program broaden the scope of Ingram’s print service options for publishers.
