Baker & Taylor Releases New App for Axis 360

Baker & Taylor released a new, free application for tablets and smartphones called axisReader, which allows patrons of libraries with the Axis 360 digital media platform to seamlessly discover, checkout, and read ebooks in EPUB and PDF formats on their mobile devices. The axisReader will be available alongside the existing Blio e-reader, which provides a fully accessible ereading experience to Axis 360 users.

Rich in features and easy to use, axisReader runs on devices with iOS- or Android-operating systems and is now available to install through iTunes and Google Play (formerly Android Market). Links to the application download pages will also be provided within the App Zone of Axis 360 library websites.

axisReader integrates fully with a library’s Axis 360 digital repository, allowing patrons to instantly borrow and download best-sellers and new release fiction and nonfiction titles in EPUB and PDF formats. The app is loaded with features including search within, dictionary lookup, and highlighting selections while reading. Personalization within the axisReader also gives the user the ability to Find A Library and to bookmark that link for easy discovery and download from the Axis 360 library.

With both axisReader and Blio—said to be the only fully accessible ereader in the marketplace—Axis 360 now offers library patrons more choices than ever. Many of the nation’s top libraries find Axis 360 to be a convenient and cost-effective way to offer digital content to patrons on a wide variety of personal computers, laptops, e-readers, smartphones, and tablets. With Axis 360, libraries have access to more than 450,000 titles, including digital audiobooks available through Baker & Taylor's new Acoustik direct-to-device download service.

Editor’s Note: Axis 360 does not support Kindle e-readers. Axis 360 was introduced in June 2011 at the American Library Association annual conference.

ebrary Adds Titles From Wiley to Academic Complete

ebrary continues to expand its flagship subscription-database Academic Complete with 1,500 high-quality titles from publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The new content focuses on academic reading levels and covers Wiley’s most prestigious imprints, including Bloomberg Press, Josey-Bass, Wiley, Wiley-Blackwell, Wrox, Sybex, and more. Academic Complete serves as a foundational, growing collection with more than 86,300 scholarly titles from which libraries can pinpoint patron needs and drive strategic ebook acquisition.

By leveraging Academic Complete to distribute certain types of ebooks including important backlist titles that would traditionally have been out of print and making others such as the most current ebooks available in other models, publishers can participate in ebrary’s new strategic approach to ebook acquisition and distribution. This approach includes working with libraries to leverage Academic Complete subscription usage statistics by discipline to determine where to strategically apply additional budget to other acquisition models. It also involves streamlining and automating the ordering process through book vendors such as YBP.

ebrary is also celebrating its 10th anniversary. With continual feedback from libraries on why they choose Academic Complete—the top 10 reasons include the following:

  1. A platform built for ebooks—including DASH! (Data Sharing, Fast) and free dedicated mobile apps for Android devices and the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  2. More discoverability—integration on the ProQuest platform, indexed in the Summon service, and deal signed with OCLC for WorldCat Local
  3. More usage data—the most-used titles aren’t always the most recent
  4. The most university presses
  5. More important publishers—including top YBP 100 publishers such as Taylor & Francis and Palgrave Macmillan
  6. More core titles—such as Doody’s Core Titles in the Health Sciences
  7. More CHOICE Outstanding Academic Titles
  8. More careful content selection by our expert librarians
  9. More awards—Library Journal’s Best E-book Database, CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, CODiE finalist for Best Service using Aggregated Content
  10. More reviews for great content
