Net Minds Launches Disruptive Team Publishing Platform

Net Minds, a new disruptive team-publishing platform co-founded by ex-Yahoo executive and New York Times best-selling author, Tim Sanders, launched Feb. 13, 2013 at the Tools of Change Conference. It aims to offer authors and the entire publishing development process a smarter alternative to both traditional and "self" publishing methods. Net Minds’ crowd-powered service gives authors rights, project autonomy, and team-building tools that make the publishing process transparent and effective.

Net Minds’ crowd-powered service gives authors rights, project autonomy, and team-building tools that make the publishing process transparent and effective. Instead of acquiring authors’ rights and giving them only 20% of the pie and little flexibility in choosing their team, title, or release date, Net Minds flips the publishing industry model. Future releases will add collaboration tools for all parts of the publishing process, from project work to crowd-sourced book proposals.

Net Minds has built a software platform that allows authors to find any member of the publishing value chain, such as editors, designers, publicists, etc., selecting potential collaborators through a discovery system that includes ratings and commentary on a professional’s work. These teammates are invited into or can request to join a project and are offered traditional transactional and nontraditional compensation options, such as percentages of the book’s financial performance, and the community then produces the book.

Impelsys Announces Commercial Launch of New eBook Ordering System

Impelsys, a provider of electronic content delivery solutions, announced the commercial launch of a new title acquisitions system for libraries that enables library staff to order ebooks for their collections directly from participating publishers. Impelsys’ new eBook Ordering System was developed in partnership with Douglas County Libraries (DCL), a seven-branch public library system in Douglas County, Colo. The ebook acquisition dashboard was beta tested by DCL’s professional staff and system modifications were made prior to commercial launch.

“The Library eBook Ordering System is an important addition to the 21st century librarian’s toolchest,” said James LaRue, director of Douglas County Libraries. “This acquisition dashboard greatly simplifies the process of managing purchases and relationships with a whole new universe of content creators.”

There are five components to the new system:

  • Catalog Feed—Import catalog lists from publishers
  • Create List—Select and add the titles for econtent acquisition
  • Purchase Orders—Generate multiple purchase orders based on the number of different publishers
  • User Management—Set up a new librarian user, new acquisition account, or reset existing account passwords
  • Email—Automatically generate email alerts to librarians for all new catalog updates, to acquisitions staff when a selection list is being submitted for purchase, and to a user when an account has been setup or updated

“This new service is very compatible with the ‘DCL Model’ for eBook acquisition and circulation,” said Jimmy Thomas, executive director of the Marmot Library Network. “Librarians leery of the high costs of ebooks will appreciate a tool that facilitates the direct purchase of ebooks, and eliminates needless mark-ups, without requiring too much extra effort by library staff.”

Impelsys is also the developer of iPublishCentral, a digital publishing software platform. iPublishCentral is the ebooks technology infrastructure used by some of the largest science, technology, medical publishers, academic publishers, and professional associations in the world.
