F1000Research Launches Following Successful Beta-Testing Phase

After receiving extensive support from the scientific community during its 6-month beta-testing phase, F1000Research now marks its official launch with a new custom-built site and takes on a stronger identity with its burnt-orange branding. “We have been delighted by the response we have received since our beta launch last July, especially from authors and referees”, said Rebecca Lawrence, publisher of F1000Research. “Many of those who have already published with us are now submitting further papers,” she added.

F1000Research’s unique combination of immediate publication followed by very fast and transparent full peer review makes it extremely attractive, especially for authors who need to publish quickly to support grant applications or who want to prevent having their work being scooped by others.

Submissions have come from around the globe and report on research supported by some of the world’s largest and most respected funding bodies, including the NIH, Wellcome Trust, WHO, NIHR, CORDIS, CNRS, NERC, and the Canadian Institutes for Health.

Some 200 of the most eminent names in biology and medicine have joined F1000Research’s international Advisory Panel (see the full listing here) and more than 1,000 global experts sit on the Editorial Board.

eBooks on EBSCOhost to be Available Via Ingram’s OASIS

“As libraries develop programs to meet the changing needs of their patrons, Ingram is uniquely positioned to help content reach its destination, regardless of whether that destination is the printed page or a digital device,” said Dan Sheehan, vice president and general manager, Ingram Content Group library services. “Through our work with EBSCO, OASIS users will have access to an expanded selection of digital content, and, the added flexibility to acquire materials that they and their patrons require from one comprehensive source.”

EBSCO and Ingram continue to work on a development plan to support all user models. eBooks on EBSCOhost via OASIS is expected to be available to academic libraries in the spring.

The OASIS platform is Ingram's comprehensive online library interface for bibliographic information and searching, book and ebook acquisition, collection development and workflow management. Through OASIS, libraries are able to access a database of millions of titles; search, select, and manage orders online; download records, including no-cost MARC downloads; monitor standing orders; manage approval plans and new title notification plans; track orders and access reporting information.

EBSCO’s extensive collection of ebook titles on EBSCOhost allows for a comprehensive and powerful search experience—with every search, relevant ebook titles appear directly alongside other EBSCO databases, exposing users to the full depth of a library’s offerings and increasing usage and visibility of the library’s entire collection. Wiley Acquires Assets of FIZ Chemie Berlin

“The FIZ suite of databases and services are a great addition to Wiley’s deep reservoir of chemical databases, journals, books, and references. The FIZ products and services will enable Wiley to build a new generation of information products to help boost the productivity of chemists,” said Steve Miron, senior vice president of the scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly group at Wiley.

The products include the ChemInform weekly abstracting service and reaction database (CIRX), as well as the abstracting journal Chemisches Zentralblatt, the InfoTherm database of thermophysical properties, and elearning tools and services.

Jon Walmsley, managing director, physical sciences and engineering, said, “The acquisition will position Wiley’s premier Chemistry publishing program and its society partners for future growth. Atlas and OCLC Announce CONTENTdm and Aeon Integration

According to Christian Dupont, Aeon program director for Atlas Systems, the integration is managed with a custom script that adds a button to item record displays in CONTENTdm online collections. End users can click the button either to page the original item for reading room use or to order a higher-quality reproduction. “Libraries want to make it easy for researchers to not only find information online but to also then request desired services through a simple, streamlined process,” Dupont said. “The integration of Aeon with CONTENTdm enables Aeon to function as the ‘shopping cart’ service that many CONTENTdm sites have been seeking.”

Aeon enhances special collections user services by offering researchers the convenience of automated online requesting through a personalized web account. Aeon maximizes staff efficiency while providing unparalleled item tracking, security, and statistics.

EBSCO Publishing Introduces Poetry & Short Story Reference Center

The full-text database includes more than 500 ebooks and provides hundreds of thousands of original works of poetry from major literary publishers spanning several centuries. Information is included from books, literary journals, as well as major respected reference works, including exclusive titles from Salem Press such as the newly released Critical Survey of Poetry and Critical Survey of Short Fiction.

Poetry & Short Story Reference Center has extensive works of American and English poets along with international poetry, and it features classic and contemporary poems, short stories, plays, speeches, classic books, biographies, critical analyses, contextual essays, and explications for important works. It also includes essays on poetic forms, techniques and movements, multimedia presentation, including more than 2,200 audio and video recordings of poets reading their work, as well as discussions and interviews. In addition, Poetry & Short Story Reference Center includes teaching and learning resources for students and educators, including lesson plans and assignments.
