OverDrive Announces Record Ebook Traffic and Next Gen Services

Public libraries using OverDrive’s Next Generation digital lending platform served a record number of ebook, audiobook, music, and video titles to patrons on Christmas Day. The most dramatic growth occurred among users of iPad, Kindle Fire, and Android devices. With One-Step Checkout and powerful, filtered search, the Next Generation library websites are optimized for both PC and mobile users, which helped pilot libraries circulate record single-day numbers of ebooks, audiobooks, music, and video. Among the libraries setting all-time ebook circulation records were Cuyahoga County Public Library (Ohio), Pioneer Library System (Okla.), Hennepin County Library (Minn.), and Mid-Continent Public Library (Mo.).

At the ALA Midwinter conference in January 2013, OverDrive will share additional data and trends with library partners and demonstrate additional Next Generation services for 2013, including new APIs as well as streaming audiobook, music, and video services. OverDrive will roll out Next Generation services for all library partners through the first quarter of 2013.

The Next Generation websites streamline the digital library experience with One-Step Checkout, a powerful search engine, and the new HTML-powered, browser-based ebook-reading technology OverDrive Read. OverDrive offers a catalog of more than 800,000 ebooks and audiobooks with support for all major computers and devices, including iPhone, iPad, Nook, Android phones and tablets, and Kindle (U.S. only).

HighWire Incorporates Article-Level Metrics With ImpactStory

HighWire Press announced that it entered into a strategic collaboration with ImpactStory, a researcher-led, nonprofit organization. ImpactStory aggregates impact data—the number of times an article is accessed and mentioned in editorials, news, tweets and blogs, as well as bookmarked, favorited, and recommended, in addition to those cited by another research paper, from sources such as CrossRef, Mendeley, and PubMed.

As part of the collaboration with ImpactStory, HighWire will manage the relationship on behalf of the participating publishers on the HighWire Open Platform, registering articles and displaying these metrics on their online journal and book sites.

According to Tom Rump, managing director at HighWire, “Our strategy is to continually embrace the future of electronic publishing by supporting technology that provides insight into furthering the research communication process.”

ImpactStory is a web service that makes it quick and easy to view the impact of a wide range of research output. ImpactStory goes beyond traditional measurements of research output—citations to papers—to embrace a much broader evidence of use across a wide range of scholarly output types. Researchers can view metrics on collections of their research objects, and publishers can display metrics on their product pages.
