Thomson Reuters Streamlines Research Process in EndNote X6

EndNote X6 gives researchers the ability to enhance the efficiency of their authorship activities by providing sync capabilities between EndNote and EndNote Web. This allows users to access research from any computer and offers secure storage for reference and PDF libraries. The new functionality--in addition to EndNote's capabilities to automatically download full-text PDFs and update references--enables users to be more productive and manage their research libraries more effectively.

Update and Sync References
With this release, EndNote X6 users can update and synchronize references in EndNote desktop and EndNote Web with one click. Users will also have the ability to maintain and synchronize references in their EndNote library across multiple computers. This is a significant improvement to EndNote, as users increasingly access numerous platforms to gather data and information. The upgrade also includes increased storage in EndNote Web.

More Effective and Efficient Editing
Through EndNote X6, researchers can now edit footnote citations, move or copy the contents of one field to another with text formatting, and use more layout options, including an improved PDF Viewer for annotating files.

Rate References
In addition to allowing for tagging solutions to indicate which references have or have not been reviewed, EndNote X6 allows users to set personal rating preferences. Users can then refine their library searches with these ratings.

The latest version of EndNote also enables users to set sophisticated customization preferences, more effectively manage medical journal names, and use the PubMed direct export feature to import records more quickly.

EndNoteX6 is currently available in Windows. The Mac version of EndNoteX6 is expected to release later this year.

Elsevier Launches New Design of Engineering Village

The new Engineering Village features include the following:

• A cleaner, uncluttered look and feel, with a more efficient search results page that make it easier to find an article
• Facets (filters) that can be re-ordered with drag-and-drop functionality
• A search history available on the home page, directly below all search forms
• An option to display up to 50, 75, or 100 results at one time
• Enhanced interoperability with ScienceDirect and Scopus, allowing librarians and researchers to reduce search time and to access information more efficiently

Engineering Village is geared specifically toward engineers, engineering students, researchers, and affiliated information professionals to ensure each can gain desktop access to the critical information, intelligence, and research tools they need to succeed. It offers a powerful web-based discovery platform featuring a broad range of scholarly literature, trade publications, patents, hard-to-find conference proceedings, technical reports, and engineering information.

Expanded Access to eBooks on EBSCOhost Now Available Through GOBI3

EBSCO customers have long been able to order ebooks through GOBI3 using the single user (1U) model. The upgraded access provides more flexibility to library selectors acquiring titles from eBooks on EBSCOhost through GOBI3. In addition to single user, the integration includes three user (3U) and unlimited user (UU) access models, as well as Demand-Driven Acquisitions. Ebooks from EBSCO are all available with no fees and no markups, making it as convenient and cost-effective as possible for librarians adding to their collections.

Mark Kendall, senior vice president of sales at YBP, says, “YBP’s unique value proposition is to build bridges between digital content providers such as EBSCO, publishers, and the libraries and consortia YBP serves. Our work together with EBSCO will provide libraries with more platform choices and flexibility to acquire the content they and their patrons require.”

Since adding eBooks to EBSCOhost, EBSCO has worked to improve access and the availability of titles and options for librarians to choose how collections are developed. Having eBooks on EBSCOhost titles available through GOBI³ allows selectors to view and select eBooks through the library's existing workflow. Librarians will be able to select single user and multi-user access (1U, 3U and UU), as well as choose titles to make available through DDA, allowing libraries to pre-select titles that are only purchased when patron usage determines need.

Print Archives Preservation Registry Now Online

The California Digital Library (CDL) is CRL’s PAPR development partner. Additional advisory services were provided by CRL consultant Lizanne Payne and Ithaka S+R. This first phase focused on developing a data analysis system for WEST and on using the standards developed by the OCLC print archives disclosure pilot project to transmit data via the MARC field 583. The next phase will address additional functional, data, and user needs.

At this time, the registry is a work in progress; its usefulness will depend upon input and participation by the CRL community. CRL welcomes all ideas and feedback. Please send comments to Amy Wood, CRL senior director of technical services at awood@crl.edu.

ebrary Enhances Strategic Ebook Acquisition Program for Public Libraries

To make it easier for public libraries to support patrons looking to start or grow a small business, ebrary’s on-staff librarians have also created a perpetual pack in Small Business Ownership and Entrepreneurship. With more than 70 recently published ebooks from trusted publishers such as AMACOM, John Wiley & Sons, Kogan Page, and Palgrave Macmillan, the pack covers topics including strategy, marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, HR, capital raising, and sustainability.
