ProQuest Expands Digital National Security Archive on Japan-U.S. Relations
ProQuest is expanding its Digital National Security Archive with newly declassified files that provide researchers with fresh insights into the modern relationship between the U.S. and Japan. Japan and the United States: Diplomatic, Security, and Economic Relations, Part III, 1961-2000 continues a series that provides the first broad digital access to memoranda of conversation between U.S. presidents and their Japanese counterparts, as well as presidential decision documents, intelligence analyses, and inter-governmental communications central to U.S. foreign policy, intelligence and security issues. Published by ProQuest in collaboration with the National Security Archive (NSA), the Digital National Security Archive provides online access to the most significant declassified primary documents in key areas of U.S. foreign and military policy since 1945.
As in previous collections on this subject, Japan and the United States: Diplomatic, Security, and Economic Relations, Part III, 1961-2000 covers a broad spectrum of issues and events unique to this relationship. Important topics include negotiations over the return of Okinawa, military relations in the wake of détente and the opening to China, security challenges in the Korean Peninsula, trade disputes in the 1980s and 1990s, and the Asian economic crisis at the close of the 20th century.
This expertly curated collection is gathered from the major agencies concerned with the management of U.S.-Japan relations and will permit scholars to refer directly to primary documents of central importance in researching these events and issues. Among the highlights are policy reviews, internal assessments of various aspects of Japan’s policies, and intelligence reports. Memoranda of conversation and diplomatic cables are also included, providing an intimate view of the dynamics of the U.S.-Japan relationship.
The NSA is a research institute, library, and publisher of declassified documentation based at The George Washington University. Since 1985, the archive’s mission has been to expand public knowledge and debate over critical issues in U.S. foreign policy by identifying, making available (through the Freedom of Information Act), organizing, indexing, and disseminating the primary sources that make up the historical record.

Elsevier Health Science Titles Now Available via eBooks on EBSCOhost
An agreement between EBSCO Publishing and Elsevier has significantly enhanced the ebook medical collection available through eBooks on EBSCOhost. The agreement adds 965 health science titles to EBSCO’s medical ebook collection with more than 580 of the titles representing coverage from 2010 to the present.
eBooks on EBSCOhost offers a variety of ebook and audiobook collections for medical research, containing high-quality titles ensuring that researchers find the right material for their healthcare needs. The titles from Elsevier further expand the variety of medical specialties covered in the medical collection including topical areas such as, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Nursing, Anesthesia, Anatomy/Physiology, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Oncology, Veterinary Medicine, Allied Health, Dentistry, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Radiology, and others.
The Elsevier titles are available in Subject Sets, which provide convenient, prepackaged sets of titles chosen to meet libraries’ needs for new content on popular, in-demand topics. The titles are also available via selection through EBSCOhost Collection Manager (ECM). ECM can be used to search or browse for ebooks and audiobooks by title, author, publisher, and more, or make selections from the Subject Sets or Featured Collections created by EBSCO’s collection development experts. LinkedIn Announces New Social News Features
LinkedIn announced the debut of two new features for the company’s social news product, LinkedIn Today. The first new feature will allow users to Like and comment on news articles. The second is a new tab called Trending in Your Network. It gives members yet another filter to sort through all of the professional news articles and industry updates, based on those articles that are currently the most popular among members of their professional networks, regardless of their industry.
These two new features, together with the existing customizable newsfeed, allow members to not only narrow down the most timely and relevant information when needed, but to also gather valuable insights about other like-minded individuals within their professional networks and beyond.
LexisNexis Launches Meeting Prep Tool for Sales and Business Professionals
LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced the launch of LexisNexis Smart Meeting, a new meeting preparation tool that integrates with Microsoft Outlook Calendar to push timely news and company updates to sales and business professionals prior to meetings with customers, prospects, and business partners so that they can drive more sales and close more deals.

IHS Acquires Invention Machine and GlobalSpec
IHS Inc. acquired Invention Machine for about $40 million. Invention Machine is a provider of semantic search technology that uncovers relevant insights held within a wealth of internal and external knowledge sources. Their patented semantic question-answering software engine leads engineers and knowledge workers to information quickly and enables them to rapidly digest it to make better decisions. As previously announced, IHS also has completed the closing of its acquisition of GlobalSpec Inc., from Warburg Pincus LLC for $135 million. GlobalSpec is a provider of specialized vertical search, product information, and global access point providing critical digital information tied to key product engineering and design workflows for 7 million engineers.
Invention Machine’s Goldfire product is the decision engine built on top of a patented semantic search engine that connects engineers and innovation and knowledge workers, on-demand, to one another and to the internal and external knowledge and trends needed to develop, maintain, and produce breakthrough products and services. Semantic search engines understand the meanings and relationships of words, and can provide more relevant results than traditional text-based search engines.
IHS president and chief operating officer Scott Key said, “Invention Machine is an excellent strategic fit for IHS and is a critical component of the evolution and transformation of the Product Design business.
