Inmagic Presto 3.7 Streamlines Information Access
Inmagic, Inc. released the latest version of Inmagic Presto, a technology built to support Social Knowledge Network applications. New functionality in Presto v3.7 streamlines connections to third-party repositories so information can be easily indexed and searched from Presto. In addition, Presto now lets users sort browse collections—recently one of the most requested features by customers. Presto 3.7 also features improved user views and configuration for more intuitive search and organization of information, and offers out-of-the-box templates for faster deployment.Presto 3.7 is quick to deploy, and features an easy-to-use, flexible user interface for gaining immediate access to information. The latest Presto enhancements include the following: - Connector Framework. Presto now provides a plug-and-play infrastructure to connect to third-party repositories. For example, sponsor information might reside in SharePoint. Presto can connect to SharePoint and index the information, so users can search it in Presto while it remains managed by SharePoint.
- Network Drive Connector. An out-of-the-box connector enables Presto to retrieve and index files stored on a network drive. The connector pipeline enables automated metadata extraction from hundreds of file formats, including audio (AIFF, AIF, AIFC), video (AVI, DV, Quicktime, Flash video, WMV), image (BMP, TIFF, GIF, JPG, MPEG), graphic (InDesign, Illustrator), Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio, Postscript, and HTML.
- Sort Browse Collections. Users can now browse collection nodes and sort within a node by rating, date created, title, and more. The action menu bar includes an Add To category to support copying items to another collection. The new page layout features a wider record pane, and the Filter & Add Records function is now on the action menu bar.
- Pre-built Content Types. Pre-built Content Types, complete with screens and views, now ship with Presto. They include Document, Image, Photograph, Audio, Video, Multimedia, URL, FAQ, and News. These help to speed new deployments and make it easier to modify an existing Presto application because it streamlines the information integration process.
- Section 508 compliance. Presto 3.7 contains several enhancements that support compliance with the Section 508 Amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This amendment requires federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities, and defines requirements for accessibility.
- Quick Search. The Quick Search box is persistent on the menu bar, so there’s no need to add Search Web Part to the Home Page. Advanced search is available through the Menu.

Wall Street Journal Launches 'SafeHouse' Submission Site
The Wall Street Journal has launched SafeHouse, a service that allows users to upload and submit tips, information, documents, or files directly to the Journal. SafeHouse is a stand-alone site located on secure servers and managed directly by Journal editors. Users can submit materials along with their contact information or remain anonymous.“The Wall Street Journal is the world’s most trusted source of news, and SafeHouse will enable the collection of information and documents that could be used in the generation of trustworthy news stories,” said Robert Thomson, editor-in-chief of Dow Jones & Company and managing editor of the Journal. SafeHouse provides a single location for readers to submit information to the Journal on any topic via multiple available formats, including text files, audio recordings, photos, and more. Information provided to SafeHouse will be reviewed and vetted by a senior Wall Street Journal editor assigned to manage the service. If a user prefers to be considered a confidential source before agreeing to provide materials to the Journal, the user can fill out a secure online form, and a Journal editor will follow up directly. NTIS Announces Biweekly Information Service
The U.S. National Technical Information Service (NTIS) has announced the availability of a biweekly information dissemination product: NTIS-Selected Research Service (NTIS-SRS). It delivers complete electronic copies of government publications based on your needs, automatically, within a few weeks of announcement by NTIS. NTIS-SRS includes the full bibliographic information in XML format. NTIS says it should be of particular interest to corporate and special libraries as it provides subscribers the ability to specify information content by 39 primary subject categories and 378 subcategories.Features of NTIS-SRS include the following: - Full text reports in your choice of 378 subject categories
- Bibliographic record for each report
- Metadata available in XML and HTML format
- Includes color documents which are not available on microfiche
- Documents are accessible on an FTP secure site in your pre-chosen profile
- Notification by email of the availability of the next issue of NTIS-SRS
- Each issue is available for access on the FTP site for 30 days
- Single zip file
- Each report is $3.00/per title
- Download to your server and provide access on your intranet

EBSCO A-to-Z Enhances Linking Capabilities from Popular Research Sites
EBSCO A-to-Z now offers an economical solution for libraries that want OpenURL link resolving capabilities but cannot afford a full-featured link resolver. Links can be easily integrated with sites like PubMed and Google Scholar so that users can link from the citation to gain access to the full-text article. If the needed article is in a subscribed EBSCOhost full-text database or within an ejournal subscribed to through EBSCO, the user is taken directly to the full text. For other titles, the user is presented with the A-to-Z title details list from which they can navigate to the appropriate full text. All of this is available at no additional charge to EBSCO A-to-Z customers.While this new EBSCO A-to-Z feature is not a replacement for LinkSource, EBSCO’s full-featured OpenURL link resolver, it offers libraries that cannot afford a link resolver an economical way to enjoy some of the benefits. Recommind announced a strategic hosting and sales alliance with LexisNexis to provide an advanced hosted eDiscovery review and analysis. YouTube Founders Acquire Delicious From Yahoo!
Delicious.com, the social bookmarking site, has been acquired from Yahoo! by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Yahoo! will continue to operate Delicious until approximately July 2011. Delicious will become part of AVOS, a new internet company that plans to build “the best information discovery service on the web.”The YouTube founders plan to work closely with the community over the next few months to develop innovative features to help solve the problem of information overload. “We see this problem not just in the world of video, but also cutting across every information-intensive media type,” said Chen. They will be building new features including a Firefox 4.0 compatible extension based on overwhelming demand. An important note is that besides browser extensions, new features will go live in July after Delicious moves to AVOS servers. Going back to their roots, Hurley and Chen located Delicious in downtown San Mateo, Calif., blocks away from where they started YouTube. They’re aggressively hiring to build a world-class team.
