SirsiDynix Launches BookMyne 2.1 and Web Services for Horizon
SirsiDynix, a provider of library automation solutions, announced the release of SirsiDynix Web Services for SirsiDynix libraries running the Horizon ILS. With the Horizon Web Services release, Horizon libraries gain advanced tools for accessing, customizing, and sharing their data. By installing Web Services, SirsiDynix Horizon libraries can also benefit from the full functionality of the SirsiDynix BookMyne iPhone application, the 2.1 release of which is available now.
With this Web Services release, Horizon libraries can access the full suite of Web Services components, plus recent functionality additions including:
- LDAP configuration support
- Expanded My Lists access and capabilities
- Ability to retrieve data on user fines and fees
- Tools for self registration allowing new users to sign up for library accounts
- Functionality for changing user pin numbers.
Web Services provides library system administrators simplified access and tools for quickly responding to the needs of library staff and users, and opens the door for even greater compatibility with third-party systems and programs. Web Services for Horizon libraries also gives Horizon libraries and users access to and representation via the BookMyne iPhone application. With BookMyne 2.1, available to all SirsiDynix libraries with a free installation of Web Services, library users can now search by title, subject, or author (in addition to keyword search).

ebrary and YBP Library Services Announce Integrated Demand Driven Acquisition and Short Term Loans
ebrary, a provider of ebooks and research technology, and long-time partner YBP Library Services, announced the launch of an integrated Demand Driven Acquisition model that may be used in conjunction with Short Term Loans. The new program enables libraries to cost-effectively and efficiently provide patrons with access to vast amounts of information through their existing YBP workflow and only purchase ebooks that are used.
Participating libraries may use YBP’s advanced profiling to automatically select appropriate ebrary content for their Demand Driven Acquisition program, with complete duplication control across all YBP services and consolidated invoicing from YBP. Custom MARC records are provided, and titles are tracked in YBP’s GOBI.
Libraries can choose to rent books prior to purchasing them under YBP’s DDA model. If a library chooses short term loans for select sets of titles under YBP’s DDA model, the library rents the title at a fraction of list price. Libraries can choose the number of short term loans (up to three) that they want before a purchase (at list price) occurs, as well as the duration, from 1 to 28 days. The longer the duration of the loan, the more they pay. When the short term loan is up, it is once again available in the DDA pool and can be once again triggered, resulting in another short term loan or automatic purchase.
YBP and ebrary are currently testing integrated Demand Driven Acquisition and Short Term Loans with select libraries. The service will be extended to all YBP customers at the end of April 2011.
Books at JSTOR Initiative Grows
Four U.S. academic publishers announced plans to bring their scholarly books online at JSTOR—Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, and California University Presses. This is the second wave of presses to join the Books at JSTOR initiative. The initial group included Chicago, Minnesota, North Carolina, Princeton, and Yale University Presses.
JSTOR was founded in 1995 and began archiving and bringing online the back issues of leading journals in economics and history. The focus is similar with books. Publishers are being invited to join the initiative based on the relevance of their titles to the content on JSTOR and importance of their publications to scholars now and in the future—an approach many librarians have come to rely on from JSTOR.
The new press signings, together with the original group, will result in more than 15,000 front and back list titles being made available at JSTOR. The presses are recognized as leaders in a wide range of disciplines including history, sociology, the arts, business and economics, and the life sciences.
The group also aims to help scholars and students find high quality and relevant books right when they need them. In addition to offering the ability to search across journals and books, JSTOR includes more than 1 million book reviews and a vast number of citations dating back hundreds of years in the 1,400 journals it makes available. The books will be linked with this other content, creating a multitude of pathways through the literature. Michael Spinella, JSTOR managing director noted, “We are eager to expose this network, making it easy for faculty and students to find and read books online, contextualize them with other content, and gain a fuller and richer perspective on the scholarly discussion.”
Books will be available at JSTOR in spring 2012 and will be preserved in Portico. JSTOR is a service provided by ITHAKA, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to help the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. ITHAKA is also home to Portico, a digital preservation service for ebooks, ejournals, and other scholarly econtent, and Ithaka S+R, a strategy and research service.
R.R. Donnelley Acquires Journalism Online and Press+ System
R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co. announced that it has acquired Journalism Online, LLC and its Press+ offering, which enables publishers to seamlessly integrate a paid content engine with their websites. Journalism Online's Press+ system supports publishers as they offer audiences a mix of free and subscription-based premium content.
Journalism Online is managed by two of the company’s cofounders, veteran digital-media leaders Steven Brill, founder of The American Lawyer magazine and Court TV, and L. Gordon Crovitz, a former Wall Street Journal publisher. According to a Donnelley representative, the Journalism Online team has become part of R.R. Donnelley.
The Press+ offering enables publishers to offer readers a mix of options for subscribing to premium content, including metered and mobile/tablet access, enhanced site functionality, out-of-market access and more. The system also provides publishers a variety of ways to engage readers with paid content, such as day or week passes, print/online bundles, monthly or annual subscriptions, and others that even allow readers to receive credit for previous day passes as they select a longer-term subscription.
“Our publishing customers continue to develop multichannel advertising and editorial strategies and Press+ provides a valuable tool for monetizing content,” says Thomas J. Quinlan III, RR Donnelley’s president and CEO. “We provide solutions across the entire breadth of the publishing supply chain, from content creation and digital asset management through subscription solicitations, processing and renewals. Press+ enhances our offering and opens new avenues for publishers to generate incremental subscription and advertising revenue.”
Crovitz says, “The scalable Press+ model enables publishers to quickly test and implement a variety of content distribution strategies. Our experience demonstrates that publishers using Press+ for metered access to web sites and other digital products retain their online ad revenue and readership while adding a valuable revenue stream from online subscriptions.”

Wolters Kluwer Health Supports Disaster Relief Efforts in Japan
In support of disaster relief efforts in Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami, Ovid and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, part of Wolters Kluwer Health, are providing free online access to emergency, disaster, trauma, and radiation contamination resources to Japanese hospitals and healthcare institutions affected by the disasters via the Wolters Kluwer Health Emergency Resources Portal. The access will be immediate and extend for 30 days.
Resources available through the portal include the following:
- Ovid MEDLINE—the comprehensive biomedical database from the U.S. National Library of Medicine
- LWW Total Access journal collection—the complete full text of more than 280 journals published by LWW
- LWW Emergency Medicine ebook collection
- LWW Critical Care medicine ebook collection
- LWW Hospital ebook collection
- LWW Nursing ebook collection
- Pre-set expert searches for instant access to relevant information on OvidSP, a medical information search and discovery platform; searches cover PTSD, disease prevention related to earthquakes, radiation contamination effects and treatment, public health responses, sanitation and vaccination, and more.
Available for a limited time during the Japan earthquake crisis, access to the Wolters Kluwer Health Emergency Resources Portal is IP-validated through the country of Japan for hospitals, institutional libraries, and other healthcare entities in Japan supporting the disaster relief efforts.

Elsevier Provides Free Clinical Reference Support for Japan Earthquake Relief Efforts
Elsevier announced that following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, the company is providing free access to its primary online clinical reference tools—MD Consult and First Consult—to all IPs originating from Japan. Free access will be available through April 2011. This effort is part of a new initiative to provide easily accessible focused resources in response to world events that present difficult medical challenges.
MD Consult is an authoritative combination of clinically relevant information to give medical professionals an answer to their clinical questions, stay abreast of recent developments, and educate patients, resulting in better patient care and improved outcomes. First Consult is Elsevier’s point-of-care content that is integrated within MD Consult and leverages evidence-based medical information to deliver answers that are trusted, quick, and accessible.
MD Consult has also added a recommended resource topic page for Radiation Sickness, which is linked from http://www.mdconsult.com.
If access to a desktop computer is problematic, MD Consult has a mobile version, and First Consult has an iPhone/iPad app that provides offline access to First Consult’s content in areas that have limited or no internet connectivity.
Elsevier is also providing free online access to medical information for healthcare professionals in Japan through the Emergency Access Initiative (EAI), a partnership of the National Library of Medicine and the Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers and other publishers. EAI provides temporary free access to full-text articles from major biomedicine titles to healthcare professionals, librarians, and the public affected by disasters. The idea for EAI was proposed in the aftermath of 9/11, but its first real use was in response to last year’s earthquake in Haiti.
