Web of Science Searchable in EBSCO Discovery Service

EBSCO Publishing and Thomson Reuters have come to an agreement allowing mutual customers to access Web of Science results within EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). The agreement means that institutions subscribing to both EDS and Web of Science may conduct their searches via the single search box of EBSCO Discovery Service, access the content in Web of Science within the results, and be able to link over to the full Web of Science record.

Web of Science provides access to leading citation databases with current and retrospective coverage in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities-including 256 disciplines. The content in Web of Science covers more than 11,000 of the highest impact journals worldwide, including open access journals and more than 110,000 conference proceedings.

Web of Science joins Baker & Taylor, The British Library's Electronic Table of Contents File (ETOC), NewsBank, Readex, LexisNexis, Alexander Street Press, and many others in the EBSCO Discovery Service.

 EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution's information resources and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage. Web of Science is one example of how EBSCO Discovery Service customers can add to the large EDS Base Index creating a truly custom collection and increasing the amount of information available to users through the single search box.

The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library's collection.

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world's foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 50,000 magazines and journals, approximately 825,000 CDs and DVDs, nearly 6 million books, more than 20,000 conference proceedings, and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.

MedlinePlus Relaunched

MedlinePlus, the trusted source for free, reliable health information from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, has a brand new look. The completely redesigned site has a freshened look and feel, a new logo, and a new color scheme.

The goals for the redesign were to incorporate suggestions from users, such as adding a homepage link to easy-to-read content and to freshen the interface. New features include the following:

• Emphasizes search and makes navigation more intuitive
• Frequently used content is easier to find
• New MedlinePlus logo for strong product branding
• Web 2.0 technologies that help users share content
• Distinctive color schemes for English and Spanish pages

MedlinePlus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on more than 800 diseases and conditions. There are directories, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, easy-to-understand tutorials on common conditions, tests, and treatments, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, videos, and links to thousands of clinical trials. Credo Reference Adds More Titles From SAGE Reference

Credo Reference has signed an agreement to expand its SAGE Reference Collection on Credo, growing it from 68 titles to 125. Now, all SAGE Reference titles published between 2000 and 2010 as well as all titles to be published in 2011 will be available through the Credo Reference platform.

The SAGE Reference Collection on Credo is available as a whole or in the following subject collections:

• SAGE Criminology Collection
• SAGE Education Collection
• SAGE Environment Collection
• SAGE Health Collection
• SAGE Management Collection
• SAGE Political Science Collection
• SAGE Psychology Collection
• SAGE Research Methods Collection
• SAGE Sociology Collection

Institutions will be able to obtain these resources from Credo either by subscription or purchase, and users will experience the content as a fully integrated part of their Credo Reference experience.

The SAGE Reference titles that will now be available through Credo Reference include the 2010 Dartmouth Medal Honorable Mention winner, Encyclopedia of Journalism; and all of the new and forthcoming 2010 titles, such as the Encyclopedia of Motherhood, Encyclopedia of Geography, and the new series Green Society: Towards a Sustainable Future.

CHLA and CIHR to Develop First Canadian Virtual Health Library

The National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI) has announced that the Canadian Health Libraries Association (CHLA) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are moving forward with the development of the Canadian Virtual Health Library (CVHL)-a first for Canada.

The CVHL is designed to improve Canadian healthcare by making high-quality health information and evidence easily accessible to all health care professionals, wherever they are in Canada, so that they can make informed decisions about patient care and education, and policy and program development.

The CVHL, which is funded by CIHR through its Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch for $800,000 over 3 years, will provide all Canadian health professionals-administrators, policy and program planners, researchers and public health workers as well as clinicians, such as doctors and nurses-easy access to current, authoritative information and expert support from the network of libraries contributing to CVHL. The CVHL will be rolled out over a 3-year period beginning in 2010.

ASM International Content Available on Knovel

Knovel, a web-based application integrating technical information with analytical and search tools, announced that content from ASM International, The Materials Information Society, including the ASM Handbook series and atlases of fatigue curves and stress-strain curves, is now available on Knovel. In May 2010, the organizations announced a partnership to combine ASM's authoritative materials content with Knovel's optimized search and data analysis features and technical references from more than 70 leading societies and publishers. ASM on Knovel will allow engineers to make better choices when selecting and utilizing materials in their products, projects, and processes.

"We made quite a bit of progress since the launch of our partnership, and I can already see the value Knovel adds to our content," said Stan Theobald, managing director of ASM International. "For example, engineers can use interactive graphs to predict material behavior under different conditions-such as, how much stress a material will bear under a range of temperatures over time. This is helpful for material selection and aids in productivity."

With a network of more than 36,000 members worldwide, ASM content is used by engineers engaged in materials selection, metal processing, metal working, and failure analysis. ASM provides materials science and engineering professionals with a broad range of authoritative information and knowledge.
