Access Innovations Announces Data Harmony Suite Enhancements for MarkLogic Server Users
Access Innovations, Inc. (www.accessinn.com) announced a new series of enhancements to its Data Harmony suite of content enrichment and thesaurus management tools specifically targeted to publishers and enterprises using MarkLogic Server (www.marklogic.com). By creating and integrating subject metadata based on a taxonomy or controlled vocabulary, the Data Harmony tools add value to content in a number of ways: - Improving the search experience for site visitors with better precision and recall, customized presentation of search results, and guidance for the user
- Improving website navigation by enabling users to browse the full "tree" of broader, narrower, and related terms in the taxonomy
- Addressing the varying needs of different kinds of visitors by providing different views of the taxonomy and targeted "pick lists" of controlled terms
- Unlocking the value of "long-tail" content by increasing discovery within deep archives;
- Cross-marketing to subscribers of one journal to subscribe or buy other journals from the collection
- Improving search engine optimization (SEO)
- Enabling visualization and interactive functionality, including enriched "Tag Clouds"-a map of concepts extracted from a set of documents-a gateway to further discovery
- Providing users with easy-to-use current awareness tools that alert them to new content in their specific areas of interest
The Data Harmony suite of thesaurus management and content management tools is the result of 31 years of experience continually working to develop ways to make the various parts of that process more efficient and more accurate. A major breakthrough has been the development of M.A.I. - the Machine Aided Indexer, which makes it possible for human categorizers ("indexers") to increase their efficiency and consistency while adding superior descriptive data, or by automating the indexing process entirely. Customers have experienced up to a seven-fold increase in productivity using M.A.I. while measurably improving consistency and coverage of individual records. Source: Access Innovations, Inc.

DOE Launches Free Portal for Green Energy Research
Green energy-related research and development (R&D) results are now more easily accessible through a new online portal, DOE Green Energy (www.osti.gov/greenenergy). The free public portal was launched on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by theU.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Office of Science. The site is designed to ease access to green energy R&D information for use by researchers, scientists, educators, students, and the general public. Researchers can use the DOE Green Energy portal to speed scientific discovery and innovation; business and industry can use the R&D to stimulate economic growth related to renewable energy. Educators, students, and the public can discover applications of renewable energy science and energy efficiency best practices. The portal provides technical documents from thousands of R&D projects conducted at DOE National Laboratories and by DOE-funded awards at universities. The DOE Green Energy portal is part of the DOE Open Government Plan, which furthers the Administration's Open Government Initiative (www.whitehouse.gov/open). DOE Green Energy contains both current and historical research, including bibliographic citations, technical reports and patent information on different types of renewable energy resources and energy conservation. Subject areas include but are not limited to solar, wind, bioenergy, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wave power, and energy storage. An easy-to-use search box allows users to selectively download, at no cost, DOE bibliographic citations and associated detailed full-text research reports and patents focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency science and technology. The website also includes a news feed provided by the DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program. This latest DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information collection searches results representing more than a $10 billion R&D investment. Thomson Reuters and WIPO Launch Free Patent Information Access in Developing Countries
The IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters (www.thomsonreuters.com) announced a partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO; www.wipo.org) to launch a program giving industrial property offices and government and academic researchers in developing countries free access to global patent information. The aim of the program, which is due to launch in September 2010, is to foster global innovation by enabling the development of solutions to the world's technical challenges. The announcement was made on April 26, 2010, designated as World Intellectual Property Day. This partnership is to be modeled after WIPO's "Access to Research for Development and Innovation" (aRDi) initiative, which provides free online access to major scientific and technical journals by not-for-profit institutions in the least-developed countries, and low-cost access to industrial property offices in developing countries. Patent content is a source of rich information when doing scientific research, as the majority of what is contained in a patent application is not yet publicly available elsewhere, and such access will significantly enhance the innovative ability of these regions of the world. Thomson Innovation, an intellectual property research and analysis platform from Thomson Reuters with patent, scientific literature, business, and news content, will be made available to researchers through the program. WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation, and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest. Getty Ends Support for Bibliography of the History of Art, Offers Free Web Access
Art historians and librarians from Europe and the U.S. met on April 20 at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art to discuss "The Future of Art Bibliography in the 21st Century." The objective of the gathering, convened by the Getty Research Institute (GRI), was to "launch a serious discussion within the art historical community about what a sustainable, collaborative, and truly international art bibliography might look like and how it might be achieved." GRI recently withdrew financial support from the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA), due to its current budget crisis. BHA is a searchable database of periodicals, books, exhibition and dealer's catalogs, conference proceedings, and bibliographies concerning the visual arts. GRI's budget is $216 million this fiscal year, a $68 million reduction from last year. GRI had assumed sole oversight of the BHA in 2007, when its French partner, the database publisher Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST)-CNRS, withdrew from the project. In a blog post (http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/the-future-of-art-bibliography/), GRI explained the situation: The GRI then sought a partner to defray the additional annual cataloguing costs and to help transform the BHA into a truly global resource, expanding its traditional focus on European art to include Asian, African, and Latin American art. After two years in which no institution stepped forward to assist with the BHA, the GRI decided to cease updating the database. Recognizing, however, the scholarly importance of the information previously catalogued, the GRI is now making the BHA universally and freely available online at http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/bha/, vastly expanding its accessibility to students and scholars worldwide.
