DataSalon MasterVision Helps AMA Connect With Customers
The American Medical Association (AMA) adopted DataSalon's MasterVision product and data from the JAMA & Archives online alerting and Continuing Medical Education services into a single master record for each customer. MasterVision lets the AMA condense records for members, journal subscribers, and pay-per-view purchasers.These records help the AMA's sales and marketing teams analyze and segment different customer groups, while improving the relevance of customer communications and letting the organization create targeted cross/up-selling campaigns based on customers' interests. MasterVision also includes a feed of third-party reference data from Ringgold that helps AMA staff members understand their institutional, library, and consortia customers. MasterVision features an interface to search, analyze, and export customer data; visual reports such as pie charts, bar charts, cross tabs, and maps; and management dashboards that combine charts and tables into a single view for one-click access to statistics and trends. EBSCO Unveils NoveList Select Recommendation Service
EBSCO Publishing introduced NoveList Select, which helps patrons avoid dead-end searches that result when the books they want are already checked out. The product uses NoveList content to recommend other books that users might find interesting.NoveList Select recommendations are live links to a library's catalog with suggestions for new titles that users can check out immediately at their libraries. The product also elaborates on each recommendation so patrons can understand why a book would appeal to them. With NoveList Select, users of NoveList and NoveList Plus can scan similar and recommended books pulled from more than 4 million titles without leaving their libraries' catalogs. NoveList Select also adds links within catalog results to recommended reading lists, author read-alikes, book discussion guides, and other feature content. The product also offers links to a library's NextReads newsletters, as well as its newsletter sign-up page. NoveList Select is available for all major integrated library systems. Perfect Search OBX Helps Google Build a Better Database Search
Perfect Search Corp. and Adhere Solutions, a Google enterprise partner, teamed up to bring Perfect Search's database indexing solutions to the Google Search Appliance. The resulting One Box Extender (OBX) lets organizations search their database content through the Google appliance's OneBox interface.Google Search Appliance users currently must send a query through the OneBox Connector to retrieve results from different systems, but OBX now offers users rapid search capabilities for Oracle, Microsoft SQL, DB2, MySQL, and any other SQL-compliant database without increasing the load on those systems. It also will integrate within the same search engine results page that the Google appliance's OneBox API uses for database searches. Thomson Reuters Joins Fight Against Swine Flu
The Healthcare and Science Business of Thomson Reuters is offering free access to its Disease Briefing on Influenza (via Prous Science Integrity) to keep the global healthcare community informed about swine flu, or influenza A (H1N1). The daily briefing, which can be downloaded from http://science.thomsonreuters.com/pharma/h1n1, gives readers updates on the flu, including topics such as the development pipeline for related drugs and vaccines, the number of laboratory-confirmed cases, and the international response to the outbreak.Disease briefings are executive summaries of the current status and future trends in drug therapy for a disease or disorder. Among the topics discussed are risk factors, prevalence and incidence, morbidity and mortality figures, and cost. The briefings also feature a structured, scientific approach to drug R&D for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of a disease or disorder. The data in the disease briefings comes from a drug R&D approach designed for life sciences researchers; these are not the medical or epidemiological approaches used elsewhere. OCLC Software Targets Museum Information Exchange
A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation helped OCLC Research complete work on an information architecture and behavior model designed to make data exchange between museums less of a headache.The resulting software, COBOAT and OAICatMuseum 1.0, was released as part of the OCLC Research Museum Data Exchange Project, which helped museums from the RLG Partnership define requirements for tools and created or contracted the creation of code. The following museums received the software: the Harvard Art Museum; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Princeton University Art Museum; and the Yale University Art Gallery. COBOAT is a metadata publishing tool that Cognitive Applications, Inc. developed to transfer information between databases and different formats. The product lets museums extract standards-based records from Gallery Systems TMS, a leading collection management system in the museum industry, in the Categories for the Descriptions of Works of Art (CDWA) Lite XML data format. Institutions can also use configuration files to adjust COBOAT for extraction from different vendor-based or homegrown database systems or from locally divergent implementations of the same collection management system. OAICatMuseum 1.0 is an Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) data content provider that supports CDWA Lite XML. Nielsen Book LibScan Shows Library Authorities How They Stack Up
Nielsen Book is launching its LibScan live reporting service, which collects library borrowing figures and uses them to help library authorities determine whether the data they are issuing from their library management systems match, underperform, or overperform other library authorities. Nielsen Book's goal is to achieve 50% coverage of all U.K. libraries by the end of this year.LibScan gathers data from a panel of authorities that gives Nielsen's BookScan a weekly list of issued ISBNs that can be used to compare authorities and check national trends. LibScan now features data from 15 library authorities; 10 more are expected to be added. LibScan data is available free of charge to participating libraries, which can access total ISBN issues for all participants. Libraries can also view data on all titles they have borrowed. The information is available via a reporting tool within LibScan that can create title and author charts over self-defined time periods. These charts can be run for a combination of genre, format, and publication date, giving library authorities an overview of their own borrowing patterns in the context of the wider library community. Borrowing trends over time can also be viewed by genre so users can examine how use is affected by season. Data is updated every 4 weeks. Source: The Nielsen Co. (www.nielsen.com)
