Dialog Adds Content; The Lancet Returns

Among the new content sources is The Lancet, a leading independent general medical journal. Its publishing history includes reports on numerous medical breakthroughs since 1823, including shell shock therapy, penicillin, and birth defects plus recent medical advancements such as the identification of coronavirus as a possible cause of SARS. Its international focus and coverage of all aspects of human health make it a key gateway for medical information research. Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Oncology, and Lancet Neurology will also be available through Dialog and DataStar. The content has a 2-month embargo from its appearance in hard copy. (Note: The Lancet [File 457/LANC] was removed from Dialog and DataStar in 2002. The Lancet was then selectively indexed by other databases. The Lancet was available from ProQuest, which acquired Dialog from Thomson Reuters in 2008.)

Additionally, more than 300 new sources have been added to ABI/INFORM, a source for authoritative business information, and 400 new sources have been added to Periodical Abstracts Plus, which provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracting of articles from more than 1,800 general-reference publications.

These content additions are part of an initiative of Dialog and ProQuest to make ProQuest's expansive selection of authoritative, full-text content more widely available to Dialog's traditional markets. The new initiative enriches the ProQuest resources available through the Dialog and DataStar platforms and also makes complementary ProQuest products on their traditional ProQuest platforms available through Dialog sales channels.

CAS Launches Free “Common Chemistry” Site

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS; www.cas.org), a division of the American Chemical Society (www.acs.org) has launched a new, free, web-based resource called Common Chemistry (www.commonchemistry.org). This resource is designed to help nonchemists and others who might know either a chemical name or a CAS Registry Number of a common everyday chemical and want to pair both pieces of information.

Common Chemistry contains approximately 7,800 chemicals of widespread and general interest, as well as all 118 elements from the periodic table. With the exception of some of the elements, all other substances in this collection were deemed of widespread interest by having been cited 1,000 or more times in the CAS databases. Examples of substances in Common Chemistry include widely recognizable ones such as caffeine, benzoyl peroxide (acne treatment), and sodium chloride (table salt).

While not intended to be a comprehensive CAS Registry Number (CAS RN) look-up service, Common Chemistry does provide access to information on chemicals of general interest. The CAS Registry Number is recognized throughout the world as the most commonly used, unique identifier of chemical substances. The full CAS REGISTRY database contains more than 46 million organic and inorganic substances. Research discovery and patent tools such as SciFinder and STN allow users to search the entire database.

CAS thanks the Wikipedia volunteers, especially Professor Martin Walker at the State University of New York-Potsdam, who collaborated with CAS to provide the links to Wikipedia records (when available). The Common Chemistry database will be updated periodically, and Wikipedia links will be added when possible.

EBSCO Adds RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals

RIPM Online Archive is a full-text version of journals indexed in RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals. The RIPM Online Archive's first installment contains 50 rarely available music periodicals selected by specialists, with new titles every 6 months. It can be accessed directly or through RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals.

Made available with the cooperation of libraries worldwide, the RIPM Online Archive offers an almost daily chronicle of musical activities, with immense possibilities for original research. It provides high-quality gray-scale images using the latest technology to create digitized versions of these difficult to obtain early 19th- to mid-20th-century documents. The RIPM Online Archive allows researchers to explore its content while viewing images that often convey the historical nature of the documents.

The interface designed for RIPM Online Archive offers numerous features: easy and intuitive page manipulation including a zoom feature, the highlighting of the section of the journal page corresponding to the selected record, and the use of two browser windows to view search results or an annotated calendar and the corresponding journal page simultaneously.

A detailed table of contents (calendar) introduces each journal issue, and each page view includes a complete bibliographical reference. Containing complete runs of journals at times pieced together from different collections, the RIPM Online Archive's current content and a selection of forthcoming titles are available at www.ripm.org.

RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals (FullTEXT) joins a large collection of databases for music research available from EBSCO. The music collection includes RISM Series A/II: Music Manuscripts after 1600, Index to Printed Music, The Music Index Online, RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, and RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals. RIPM and RILM combine to treat music periodicals dating from 1800 to the present.
