Academic.edu Provides a ‘Tree’ of Academics Around the World

Academia.edu is a recently launched website that enables graduate students and academics to create academic webpages and to find other academics around the world with the same research interests. The new collaborative site (www.academia.edu) does two things: It shows academics around the world structured in a "tree" format, displayed according to their departmental and institutional affiliations, and it enables academics to see news on the latest research in their area—the latest people, papers, and talks. The service is free at this time.

The team behind the new site comprises graduates of Oxford, Cambridge, and Stanford universities and a current student at the Art Institute of California–San Francisco. The team hopes that Academia.edu will eventually list every academic in the world—faculty members, postdocs, graduate students, and independent researchers (http://independent.academia.edu). Academics can add their departments, and themselves, to the tree by clicking on the boxes. Academic librarians are encouraged to participate. Academics are joining the tree rapidly. More than 15,000 academics have added themselves in the last 2 months.

New Open Source Translation Management System

The forthcoming GlobalSight open source translation management system (TMS), sponsored by Welocalize (www.welocalize.com), will provide support for Clay Tablet 2.0 to enable connectivity to a wide variety of content management systems (CMS) or content repositories. This approach ensures "out of the box" connectivity to a wide range of CMS and integration possibilities with most others.

GlobalSight will launch on Jan. 5, 2009, as the first open source TMS product that provides a scalable translation management platform for companies to manage, translate, and deliver global content. Current development efforts have focused on transitioning the product to open source by replacing several third-party software components with open source equivalents.

Clay Tablet 2.0 from Clay Tablet Technologies (www.clay-tablet.com) provides a neutral and prevalent platform to connect with a wide variety of content repositories. By using the Clay Tablet SDK, GlobalSight users will be able to connect quickly and easily to their CMS of choice.

GlobalSight is a collaborative, open source initiative to develop a flexible and sustainable TMS that leverages the best ideas and addresses the true needs of the industry. In this noncaptive community, participants are free to discuss, discover, and build upon a translation process automation tool that provides choice and flexibility and can be shared by all. The direction and development of the GlobalSight Open Source Initiative is dictated by community members. For more information and to join the community, visit www.globalsight.com.

Quintura Offers Customizable Options for Web Publishers

Quintura (www.affiliates.quintura.com), provider of a visual-based site search solution for online content publishers, announced new features for its publishing affiliates. These customizable options, which include the incorporation of icons and banners into the search cloud and the addition of three new "morphology" dictionaries, are designed to offer an enhanced user experience and higher click-through rate for advertisers.

Quintura’s site search solution, which offers web publishers a patented, site search platform with intuitive, visual search and navigation based on neural networks, has been enhanced with new customizable options including the following:

  • Cloud Images—A new interface enables publishers to embed images and banners (i.e., brand logos and advertisements) in the search cloud. When users mouse over an icon or search term, it expands into a banner, dramatically increasing the click-through rate in tests.
  • Icon Blink—To attract users to images within the search cloud, Quintura now offers publishers customizable special effects, including blinking icons to help boost click-through rates.
  • Stand-alone Search Bar Option—The stand-alone search bar enables publishers to link Quintura Site Search to a separate webpage so that when search terms are entered, a new window opens, displaying the full-range of search results.
  • Color Customization¬—Additional color options allow publishers to customize all aspects of the site search display to match their website.
  • Language Localization—A semantic search engine, Quintura has added French, Italian, and Spanish morphology engines, in addition to the existing English, German, Portuguese, and Russian systems, producing more contextually accurate search results in a variety of languages and locations.

Quintura has developed a unique monetization model that will soon be available for digital publishers. The site search is free for web publishers through an advertising revenue-sharing agreement and is also available on a subscription basis. Quintura, Inc., founded in 2005, is a U.S. company with research and development offices near Moscow.
