Thomson Learning to Become Cengage Learning

Thomson Learning (www.thomsonlearning.com) has announced that it will change its name to Cengage Learning. The company, recently acquired by Apax Partners (www.apax.com) and OMERS Capital Partners (www.omerscapital.com) from The Thomson Corp. (www.thomson.com), said the new name is based on being at the "center of engagement" for its customers worldwide. It will continue to emphasize its brands, including Heinle, Gale, Wadsworth, Delmar Learning, Brooks/Cole, and South-Western, among others.

The company will introduce the Cengage Learning identity throughout the business beginning on Aug. 31, 2007, and in the meantime will continue to operate under the Thomson Learning name.

RefWorks to Release ‘Offline’ Version

RefWorks, LLC (www.refworks.com), a provider of Web-based research management, writing, and collaboration tools for the academic and research communities, announced the development of an ‘offline’ version of its flagship service. With the upcoming release of Write-N-Cite 3.0, RefWorks users will be able to use the program to write papers and generate bibliographies when not connected to the Internet. The company said this has been a frequently requested feature.

Write-N-Cite 3.0 will also provide the user with the ability to use a single document for the generation of bibliographies, further simplifying the process of creating papers and increasing the speed of bibliography generation. RefWorks will begin beta testing Write-N-Cite 3.0 for Microsoft Windows, including the new Vista operating system, in early fall 2007.

RefWorks is a privately held company with offices in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and Hong Kong. RefWorks was founded in 2001 by a team of experts in the field of bibliography database management. RefWorks supports hundreds of online databases and output styles covering a broad range of subject areas. RefWorks collaborates with many online information service providers, including ProQuest, BioOne, EBSCO, Elsevier, HighWire, H.W. Wilson, ISI, OCLC, and Ovid. More than a half million researchers in 800-plus institutions globally use RefWorks daily.

Factiva SalesWorks Gets Improved Integration Capabilities

Dow Jones & Co. (www.dowjones.com) announced a new platform capability that offers a range of flexible integration options for Factiva SalesWorks, a collection of company, industry, and executive news and information designed specifically to help salespeople increase productivity. The improved integration options are currently available in beta to Factiva SalesWorks customers.

Factiva SalesWorks can now be quickly configured to portals, intranets, or CRM platforms, or as a widget. The new simplified integration capability leverages Web 2.0 technologies, which allow organizations to focus less on complex Web services development and more on implementing sales intelligence throughout the enterprise. Additionally, developers will be able to use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and a REpresentational State Transfer (REST)-like model, a simple, lightweight data format that is better suited to Web development. By supporting JavaScript more natively, integration of business information and sales intelligence is more accessible via client-side browser development as opposed to complex server-side development.

Factiva SalesWorks provides information on millions of public and private companies and executives worldwide and allows users to quickly identify and qualify prospects with in-depth company information, executive biographies, prospecting lists, competitor analyses, and targeted news coverage.
