ebrary Announces New Content Providers, New Distribution Partner
ebrary, Inc. (http://www.ebrary.com) has announced that it has signed agreements with 12 university presses for content. These new content providers are MIT Press, University of California Press, Stanford University Press, Columbia University Press, University of Texas Press, University of North Carolina Press, University of Nebraska Press, University of Hawaii Press, University of Wisconsin Press, Marquette University Press, Purdue University Press, and University of Utah Press.Under terms of the agreements, the university presses will provide ebrary with thousands of titles ranging from business and finance to anthropology and zoology. Many of these works will be available to ebrary's online channel partners, such as e-learning providers, Internet portals, and library Web sites, as part of the ebrarian solution, and will also be available on the ebrary.com site, which has not yet officially launched. ebrary also announced that it has partnered with Bertelsmann subsidiary Springer-Verlag (http://www.springer-ny.com), a leading scientific publisher, to make mathematics and statistics collections available through ebrarian and ebrary.com. Finally, ebrary announced that the Learning Network (http://www.learningnetwork.com), part of media company Pearson, PLC, will utilize the ebrarian solution for channel partners. With ebrarian, the Learning Network will provide its community of students, professionals, and lifelong learners with access to ebrary content. ebrary is privately held and is funded by Random House Ventures, LLC; Pearson, PLC; and McGraw-Hill. Northern Light, Search4Science Launch New Search Service
Northern Light Technology, Inc. (http://www.northernlight.com) and the Oslo, Norway-based Search4Science (http://www.search4science.com) have teamed up to launch an enhanced online search service focused on the specific needs of scientists worldwide. Search4Science's patent-pending technology, Dynamic Search, now presents search results using Custom Search Folders, Northern Light's patented classification technology.Dynamic Search encourages the user to add words to a query by presenting appropriate synonyms as well as relevant words or concepts for limiting the search. In addition, Dynamic Search learns from the behavior of users by continuously updating synonyms and encouraging searchers to use terminology contributed by other users. Northern Light further enhances the user's search experience by organizing search results into labeled folders, grouped by subject, type, source, region, and language. According to the announcement, by combining the two technologies, the new Dynamic Search assists the user in building a better search initially and encourages more efficient access to targeted results from a large search set. Over the last few months, the initial scientific database of synonyms has grown from 50,000 to more than 235,000, all the result of user input during searching. Search4Science expects that this evolutionary process will continue and that the quality of the user experience will continue to improve as users suggest relevant synonyms and limiting words. The design and programming of Search4Science is the result of close collaboration with Cell Network (http://www.cellnetwork.com). The complete technology platform can be licensed to create similar vertical portals. According to the announcement, the patent-pending Dynamic Search method is based on Darwinistic evolution theory and will soon be tested for general searching of the Internet. Ovid@Hand Brings Hand-Held Technology to Clinicians
Ovid Technologies (http://www.ovid.com) officially launched Ovid@Hand last week at the Medical Library Association meeting in Orlando, Florida. Ovid@Hand, a new product developed by Ovid Technologies and Unbound Medicine (http://www.unboundmedicine.com) allows clinicians to order medical information database searches or learn about new journal articles directly from a Palm Pilot, Handspring Visor, or other hand-held device. Ovid@Hand uses CogniQ, Unbound Medicine's integrated hand-held and Web knowledge management platform. The product will be available in test markets during the summer, with a planned rollout to customers later this year.With Ovid@Hand, subscribers will be able to enter requests for specific information, articles, or searches directly into their hand-held device at any time throughout the day. They can also review the latest tables of contents from their own preselected, personal library of medical journals. Whenever they sync their hand-held device with their computer, Ovid@Hand instantly and automatically fulfills the requests, according to the announcement. Source: Ovid Technologies
