JMIR Publications Signs Unlimited OA Agreement With University of Turku

JMIR Publications entered into a new Flat-Fee Unlimited Open Access Publishing Agreement with the University of Turku (UTU). The partnership is effective Jan. 1, 2026–Dec. 31, 2026. It “replaces individual Article Processing Charges (APC) with an Institutional Publishing Fee (IPF) that covers all UTU affiliated researchers.”

“The agreement with the University of Turku is a blueprint for the future of equitable open access.” says Dennis O’Brien, VP of communications and partnerships at JMIR Publications. “By securing unlimited publishing rights under a single institutional fee, Turku is solving two major challenges: eliminating the financial barriers for their authors and supporting the independent publishers that keep our scholarly ecosystem diverse and competitive.”

More Sponsors Come to Kudos' Zero-Click and AI Search Study

Kudos has expanded “its fast-track research initiative, ‘Taming the Crocodile’, with five new sponsors joining the study: Elsevier, Wiley, BMJ Group, American Physical Society and Oxford University Press.” The study’s goal is “to examine the impact of zero-click search (‘Google Zero’) and AI-generated overview panels on the scholarly communications ecosystem.”

“As zero-click search becomes more common, researchers may get answers without seeing sources, context, or caveats. We’re sponsoring this project because we need to understand how that shift affects trust, attribution, and the availability of rigorous research,” says Rachel Burley, the American Physical Society’s chief publications officer.
