ProQuest Introduces Electronic Dissertation Submission System

ProQuest Company's Information and Learning unit, in conjunction with The Berkeley Electronic Press (http://www.bepress.com), has developed a Web-based application for the submission, review, and approval of electronic theses and dissertations. The new automated system, which will be made available free to graduate schools, is expected to improve and speed the dissertation publishing process for graduate students, faculty, and graduate schools.

The new system allows a graduate student to upload an approved dissertation into the publishing system, where it is automatically reformatted into Adobe PDF and sent directly to the graduate school. There, the document is reviewed for compliance with graduate school policy and format. Using an administrative tool, the graduate school reviewer can accept the document or request formatting revisions. The author is automatically notified by e-mail of the actions taken.

Once the thesis is accepted, the document and all relevant data are delivered to UMI Dissertation Publishing and to the university library for expedited processing, cataloging, and posting. The service is available now and is being rolled out to graduate schools throughout the year.

WilsonWeb Databases Link to SwetsWise E-Journals

SwetsWise will be added to the list of WilsonWeb's WilsonLink full-text sources, the result of a reciprocal agreement between H.W. Wilson and Swets Blackwell that will also make WilsonWeb an information source for SwetsWise databases. Customers who subscribe to both WilsonWeb and SwetsWise will be able to access full text, where available, on either server. WilsonWeb subscribers will also be able to link to tables of contents for journals carried on SwetsWise.

SwetsWise offers access to over 7,000 scholarly and research journals in full text. More than 50 H.W. Wilson reference databases are available via WilsonWeb.

WilsonLink technology allows libraries to integrate open-URL compatible resources without installing their own link server, and at no additional cost to their WilsonWeb subscription. SwetsWise is just one of the many electronic publishers and other information providers that, via WilsonLink SFX-powered software, seamlessly integrate with databases on WilsonWeb.

AP Expands Agreement with InfoDesk

The Associated Press (http://www.ap.org) announced that it has finalized an expanded license agreement with InfoDesk (http://www.idsk.com), a developer of real-time content distribution technology. Under its original agreement with InfoDesk, AP was able to use the content management and delivery tools developed by InfoDesk, specifically InfoViewer and InfoClient, to deliver AP branded content. The new agreement enables AP to distribute any third-party, non-AP content in any fashion to its members and customers.

AP Telecommunications, a commercial division of AP that distributes third-party content such as press release wires and trade journal articles via satellite to AP member newspapers as well as non-member customers, will now be able to offer this new Internet-based delivery option.

AP Digital and AP Information Services, both commercial AP divisions, will also expand the use of InfoDesk applications to provide both AP and non-AP originated content to customer Web sites and other interactive applications.
