Sirsi Selects MuseGlobal to Power SingleSearch Plug-Ins
Sirsi Corp. has announced that MuseGlobal technology will be incorporated in the release of Sirsi SingleSearch, version 2, a multiprotocol search technology that allows users to search multiple network-accessible information resources simultaneously from a single interface. Version 2 includes broadcast search functionality from the MuseSearch product, including connectors, which will enable Sirsi SingleSearch to maintain reliable access to the thousands of resources that are searchable within the system.Available in the first quarter of 2003, Sirsi SingleSearch, version 2 will be available for Sirsi's iBistro, iLink, and Web2 user interface systems. The product will also provide key broadcast search functionality for Sirsi's soon-to-be launched context management solution. Sirsi SingleSearch will provide access to nearly 5,000 free and licensed information services, including library catalogs, Internet search engines, and commercial abstract and index databases using Z39.50, XML, HTTP, SQL, and a number of other protocols. MuseGlobal will ensure that current source connectors remain up-to-date and reliable, while also developing new connectors to accessible resources in demand by Sirsi libraries and library users. ebrary Launches New Database Collections and the Sale of eBooks
ebrary announced the availability of new database collections with over 20,000 books and other documents from more than 150 academic, trade, and professional publishers. ebrary's Aggregated Collections now cover Business & Economics, Computers, Technology & Engineering, Humanities, Life & Physical Sciences, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. The company also offers a strong collection of Spanish-language titles and aggregated collections specifically for both academic and public libraries. The Publisher Collections are from Byron Hoyt (more than 5,000 classical sheet music titles), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (over 4,000 books, journals, and technical papers), and Octavo (more than 30 rare and original manuscripts).ebrary's database collections enable simultaneous, multiuser access, feature advanced research tools and integrate with existing ILS systems and digital resources, with full MARC records provided. ebrary's technology turns every word in every document into a highly interactive experience. The company also announced a selection of hundreds of individual eBooks--for libraries that prefer to purchase and own individual titles and provide "check out" options where only certain numbers of students or patrons can access a title at a given time (this is similar to netLibrary). ProQuest Announces Enhancements and New Linking Partnerships
ProQuest Co.'s Information and Learning unit has entered several linking partnerships and enhanced its OpenURL capabilities to allow users to move seamlessly between ProQuest databases and their other online resources—e-journal subscriptions, library catalogs, aggregator databases, document delivery services, linking resolvers, and more. The OpenURL architecture at the core of ProQuest's initiatives supports linking from ProQuest to other resources and vice versa.ProQuest announced new interface enhancements to its ProQuest Historical Newspapers product. Improved date range tools allow users to pinpoint issues more effectively from nearly every search screen. Other enhancements include: seamless searching of the entire backfile, which significantly simplifies broad searches; streamlined display of search options; and an improved help menu customized for users. ProQuest also announced an enhanced American Periodical Series, with new historical periodical content and a new custom interface. In all, more than 50 titles spanning more than 1 million pages have been added to the database since August 2002. The process will continue until all 1,100 titles are complete in 2004.
