Open Text Acquires Corechange
Open Text Corp. announced it has acquired Corechange, Inc., a portal provider based in Boston Coreport, the main product from Corechange, provides an enterprise access framework, deploying secure, scalable intranet and extranet portals. It will be integrated with Open Text's Livelink, a collaboration and knowledge management system. "The Coreport portal framework includes a unique set of built-in features that make it easy to collaborate effectively with colleagues, customers and partners," said Tom Jenkins, CEO of Open Text. "By combining this portal framework with the Livelink product family, we create integration at the point of access extending the functionality of leading business applications."Source: Open Text Corp.
Five Publishers File Copyright Suit Against Coursepack Producers
Five publishers of STM publications have filed suit against Paradigm Books, Inc. of Austin, Texas, Paradigm Course Resource, Inc. of Minneapolis and their president and owner Robert Pyeatt for copyright infringement. The suit, filed by Elsevier, Inc., The MIT Press, University of Chicago Press, Sage Publications, Inc., and John Wiley & Sons, Inc., charges the defendants routinely photocopied materials from their publications without authorization.The defendants operate copy shops near the campuses of several colleges and universities in Minnesota and Texas. The publishers' complaint, filed recently in the U.S. District Court for the central district of Illinois-Urbana-Danville Division, alleges that one or more of the defendants are also doing business near the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, under the name Notes & Quotes. The primary purpose for which the defendants copy the publishers' materials is the preparation and sale of coursepacks, in which selected readings for a college or graduate course are compiled and photocopied for use in a particular class. Copy shops cannot reproduce and sell coursepacks without permission from the rightsholders. The case is the latest in a series of cases being coordinated by Copyright Clearance Center. H.W. Wilson Expands Journal Coverage
H.W. Wilson announced that two WilsonWeb periodicals databases—Art Full Text and Social Sciences Full Text—are being enhanced with increased journal coverage, new treatment of key specialties, and broader international scope. The new coverage will also be reflected in Art Abstracts, Art Index, Social Sciences Abstracts, and Social Sciences Index.Fifty-one new periodicals have been added to Art Full Text (starting with January 2003 issues), boosting total coverage to nearly 450. Art Full Text users will note new coverage of crafts, costumes and textiles, non-western art, contemporary art, and feminist art criticism, plus broader coverage of archaeology, architecture, and art history. The database also provides new coverage of sources from Europe, East and Central Asia, Australia, and Canada. New journals were selected with the help of prominent art library consultants and the ALA RUSA Committee on Wilson Indexes. Social Sciences Full Text adds 32 journals (starting with June 2003 issues), more than doubling its coverage of mass media and communications titles, while also increasing coverage of area studies. New area studies titles encompass Africa and Asia, with a focus on Korea and Japan. All the additions are peer-reviewed journals and core sourcebooks in their respective specialties, recommended by Magazines for Libraries as well as the ALA RUSA Committee on Wilson Indexes.
