ProQuest Expands Early American Fiction Collection
ProQuest Information and Learning has expanded its database of Early American Fiction (1789-1875) by 25 years with the addition of dozens of rare early American novels and short stories. The company says the collection is the most comprehensive view of American fiction of the period and the only Web-based resource for most of the works. When complete, it will hold more than 750 full-text first editions, all fully searchable. The database formerly covered 1789-1850.The source books come from the Special Collections held in the Alderman Library of the University of Virginia. Users will find high-profile works by major authors alongside rarities by lesser-known figures, 140 authors in all when complete, providing context and historical reference points, and serving growing scholarly interest in the period. Complete, up-to-date author biographies commissioned for the database and author portraits are included. All works are 99.995% accurate full texts in high resolution preservation-quality color images. All are searchable by keyword, phrase, title, keyword, and author. Searches may be limited by gender of the author or publication details of the work. Early American Fiction (1789-1875) is available to all institutions that subscribe to Literature Online or as a stand-alone purchase. Free trials are available. Group Collaborates on Health Informatics System for Canada
A group of universities, health information associations, and companies in Canada, called the Pan-Canadian Health Informatics Collaboratory (http://www.health.bcit.ca/hic/index.html) announced that they are in the final stages of creating a knowledge management and collaborative e-learning platform for Health Informatics to serve the health system and educational institutions across Canada. A prototype of the new system, which is based on LiveLink from Open Text, will be ready in July, with completion slated for December.A unique aspect of the system will be its role as a nationwide repository for educational materials for the Health Informatics field. The system will allow educational content submitted from institutions across the country to be shared and reused, or tailored for new purposes. The repository will contain a wide range of information, including documents, educational materials and course modules; images, graphs and models; and audio and video content. The system will incorporate metadata and search capabilities to classify and organize educational content, and make it easily searchable and accessible by users. The collaborative e-learning features will allow professors and students to interact within and between organizations. The e-learning component of the system will utilize Livelink MeetingZone, Open Text's online team meeting software, which is integrated with its Livelink software suite. AskJeeves to Sell Enterprise Software Division
Ask Jeeves, Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement for Kanisa, Inc. to acquire Jeeves Solutions, the enterprise software division of Ask Jeeves. Jeeves Solutions' search technology and analytics will enable Kanisa to offer a larger, more robust suite of customer service solutions to corporate customers worldwide. With the sale, Ask Jeeves said it will focus solely on its growing Web-wide search business.Kanisa will acquire substantially all assets of Jeeves Solutions including the JeevesOne technology and its approximately 40 corporate customer accounts. Some Jeeves Solutions customers include Nike, Cincinnati Bell, Novartis, and Ford. Kanisa will pay a purchase price of $4.25 million. The sale is expected to close in July 2003. Companies using Kanisa software include Microsoft, Apple Computer, eBay, Hewlett Packard, Network Associates, and Northrop Grumman. Kanisa has worldwide headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Skip Battle, CEO of Ask Jeeves, said, "Jeeves Solutions' customers and employees will greatly benefit from Kanisa's exclusive focus on enterprise software, leading customer service applications, and seasoned management team." Ask Jeeves deploys its search technologies on Ask Jeeves (Ask.com and Ask.co.uk), Teoma.com, and Ask Jeeves for Kids (AJKids.com), and syndicates its search technology and advertising units to a network of affiliate partners.
