Kudos and ACS Publications Join Up to Add to the SDG Knowledge Cooperative

Kudos teamed up with ACS Publications to increase the reach and impact of research surrounding the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The collaboration will see ACS Publications joining the SDG Knowledge Cooperative, an initiative led by Kudos wherein publishers join forces to help more people find, understand and act on research that will help drive progress towards achieving the SDGs,” Kudos shares. “Kudos will help identify articles published within ACS Journals with the greatest impact potential in terms of driving innovation, changing attitudes and, behaviours, and accelerating better outcomes. Selected articles will be summarized for broader audiences, and actively promoted to groups including industry, educators, policy makers and the media.”

OverDrive Starts a Publishing Imprint to Help Foster Childhood Literacy

OverDrive introduced Heights Press, “a boutique publishing imprint inspired by the vibrant creativity and community spirit of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Rooted in OverDrive’s Cleveland home, Heights Press reflects the company’s deep mission to support schools and libraries in promoting literacy and a love of reading,” the press release states.

The first publishing output is a six-ebook series for middle-grade readers called Hickory Hollow and a series of video shorts. The ebooks, which are told from multicultural perspectives, “are now available exclusively for public libraries and schools worldwide” for the Libby and Sora platforms—and the video shorts are available for Kanopy Kids—in five languages: English, Chinese, German, Vietnamese, and Korean. The video shorts don’t cost an additional fee, and the first ebook in the series is free, with the others available for purchase. OverDrive also plans to make audiobook versions available.

Urban Libraries Council Publishes Best Practices for Libraries and Homelessness

The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) “released a new set of best practices designed to help libraries better serve those experiencing homelessness in their communities. Informed by library leaders across the U.S. and Canada, the report recommends that community partnerships, staff development, and intentional physical design, can better support both unhoused patrons and the library staff who serve them.”

“Public libraries across North America are increasingly at the forefront of addressing the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness,” says Brooks Rainwater, ULC’s president and CEO. “By adopting these best practices, libraries can make a lasting impact on those experiencing homelessness and ensure that they remain safe, supportive spaces for everyone.”

Book Riot Reports on Latest Publisher Stance on Artificial Intelligence

Rebecca Joines Schinsky writes the following in “Penguin Random House Moves to Prohibit AI Companies From Using Its Books” for Book Riot:

In a move that appears targeted to the European Union market, where copyright holders already have legal protection to opt their work out of data mining, Penguin Random House will add language to its copyright pages that expressly prohibits use of the material for training AI technology. …

Will this be a warning shot heard ’round the globe? PRH is the largest publishing house in the world, and this is a strong signal about the direction its leaders want to take the industry on the AI issue.
