IMLS Rolls Out an Information Literacy Resource

IMLS “released InformationLiteracy.gov, a website with specialized tools and resources designed for library and museum professionals to engage diverse communities in developing critical information literacy skills.”

“Guided by an Information Literacy Taskforce comprised of 16 federal agencies, we set out to help confront the challenges, faced by people of all ages and backgrounds, of a lack of information literacy in many areas,” says Cyndee Landrum, IMLS’s acting director. “We want to empower these trusted library and museum professionals who play a critical role in helping improve digital, financial, and health literacy to serve the needs of diverse communities.”

Kudos Will Showcase Sheffield Hallam University Research

Kudos was “chosen by the Library at Sheffield Hallam University to Showcase research from the University’s repository. Kudos is generating AI summaries of selected articles in the repository, and hosting these in vibrant image-led Story pages, which link back to the full text articles in the repository. The summaries will also be disseminated via Kudos Showcases, both at the institutional level, and in collections curated by academic subject areas or topical themes such as climate change. Showcasing research via Kudos is correlated to higher views, readership, discussion and citations.”

The Latest OverDrive News

OverDrive has made a flurry of announcements recently.

On June 19, the company launched “three new All Access Collections of simultaneous use ebook subscriptions for libraries. Designed to address the significant growth in reader demand for eBooks within the Libby and Sora apps, libraries will delight patrons with access to a growing catalog of in-demand titles without any holds. These genre-specific collections, priced with a fixed annual fee, will add meaningful inventory of popular titles to libraries and supplement other access models available from OverDrive Marketplace.”

On June 21, the next Big Library Read was unveiled: Twilight Territory by Andrew X. Pham. Set in 1942, “Twilight Territory is a lush, panoramic novel of love, war, and resistance as it follows one woman’s struggle for independence and her country’s liberation,” OverDrive notes.

On June 26, OverDrive introduced Check Out Your Library, “a movement designed to introduce and reacquaint millions of Americans with the invaluable resources and stories housed within their public libraries. This initiative aims to celebrate and elevate the role of libraries and librarians as community cornerstones across the United States. By promoting local events and programming, it aims to draw new and returning patrons to explore the amazing resources and offerings of their local libraries.”

On June 27, announced that OverDrive Marketplace reached the milestone of “more than 1 million ebooks and audiobooks available in the OverDrive Max (ODMAX) access model.” In addition, Sora became “one of six new partners coming soon to Google for Education’s expanded app licensing program, which is ultimately geared at providing educators with a wider range of integrated tools to enrich the teaching and learning experience.”

Gadget Software Launches AI-Based Products to Facilitate Regulatory Compliance

Gadget Software introduced TopicLake Policy Alerts and the TopicLake Policy Insights API. The company shares:

TopicLake Policy Alerts is designed to revolutionize how organizations stay informed about federal regulations. This innovative product offers an affordable and efficient approach to keeping up with proposed and newly enacted rules published in the Federal Register. By leveraging advanced AI, TopicLake Policy Alerts scans for relevant rules, delivers timely alerts directly to users’ inboxes, and provides a personalized dashboard for managing updates.

TopicLake Policy Insights API “offers over four years of AI-generated regulatory topics, summaries, and annotations. Covering every federal agency, this API provides millions of insights, empowering organizations to navigate the complex regulatory landscape with ease.”

CABI Adds Three Journals to ResearchGate

ResearchGate partnered with CABI to “increase the visibility of CABI’s research journals through ResearchGate’s innovative Journal Home offering. CABI is ResearchGate’s first [intergovernmental organization] partner publisher with the following journals included in the partnership: CABI One Health (open access), CABI Reviews (hybrid) and Human-Animal Interactions (open access).” They cover global agricultural and environmental issues and the applied life sciences.

“Dedicated journal profiles will be activated on the ResearchGate platform and will also be prominently featured on all associated articles and relevant touchpoints throughout the network. These profiles support readers and potential authors by providing key information and content from the journals, as well as allowing ResearchGate members to explore how their own network is connected to a journal,” ResearchGate notes. “For CABI authors, the ResearchGate partnership means their articles will be automatically uploaded to their ResearchGate profile. This provides a unique opportunity for authors, often working in areas that support both practitioners and scientists, to understand who is benefiting from their work through insights about who is reading their content as well as the means to connect with their readers.”

The OECD Goes OA

The OECD iLibrary added a note to its homepage stating, “All data, reports and analysis in all formats are now available under an open licence, allowing users to freely use, translate, and share the Organisation’s work.”

“The OECD’s adoption of an open-access model will make reliable and relevant information freely available, empowering citizens and informing democratic decision-making processes,” says Mathias Cormann, OECD’s secretary-general.

Exact Editions Introduces a Discount Deal and Launches New Archives

Exact Editions has been busy this month.

On July 1, the company teamed up “with the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) to provide a deal for select research libraries across the United States,” which is available until July 1, 2025. “The deal includes discounted prices on bundles of titles. The research libraries can select from over 180 esteemed titles across the Exact Editions platform, spanning a range of research areas, including science, music, geography, art and more. Exact Editions aims to provide academic libraries with the opportunity to invest in a diverse assortment of digital resources for their students.”

On July 4, Exact Editions announced, “Members of the British Artist Blacksmiths Association (BABA) can now access a complete digital archive of the organisation’s magazine, Artist Blacksmith, through its website. … [T]he archive is fully-searchable, stretches back to 1979 and will grow with each new issue published. Multi-user site licences, authenticated by IP address, are also available to libraries worldwide.”

On July 8, Exact Editions added a complete digital archive for New Welsh Review, “now available to individual and institutional subscribers via Exact Editions’ digital platform. Readers can now search for back issues going back to the very first issue published in 1988, with over 30 years of searchable content to explore as well as new issues as they are published.” The literary magazine “offers a vital outlet for the very best new fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry, as a dynamic forum for critical debate and a rigorous reviewing culture.”

OverDrive Details Plans for Its Check Out Your Library Initiative

OverDrive announced the following:

[On July 9], the leading brands in digital content for libraries and schools, including LibbySora, and Kanopy, announced the launch of ‘Check Out Your Library.’ This multiyear experiential initiative aims to establish new connections between millions of Americans and the invaluable resources available from their local public and school libraries. Check Out Your Library will seek to reverse the recent decline in patron visits to their local libraries that resulted from closures throughout the pandemic. …

The inaugural Check Out Your Library event will take place at AREA15, an immersive entertainment district in Las Vegas, on July 20, 2024. In partnership with Meow Wolf, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will host Julia Whelan, award-winning audiobook narrator and author of My Oxford Year and Thank You For Listening, for a Q&A and book signing during the event. …

The second Marquee Event is scheduled for August 15, 2024, at Truist Field in partnership with the Charlotte Knights and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Charlotte Mecklenburg School District. On August 16, 2024, comedian, actor, and New York Times best-selling author Paul Scheer will be at a Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library branch promoting his new book Joyful Recollections of Trauma.

Gale Literature Resource Center Gets Updates

Gale, part of Cengage Group, updated Gale Literature Resource Center. “The company has added new curated sets of primary sources and historical documents along with a host of other new and improved features to support primary source literacy and instruction. Developed based on user feedback, these updates were designed to make conceptualizing primary source documents easier for students who are less familiar using these resources, as well as provide instructors and librarians with content to contextualize literary works and serve as models to support primary source literacy.”

Silverchair and Cadmore Media Join Forces to Improve Video Hosting for Clients

Silverchair made Cadmore Media its preferred video provider. “This collaboration marks a significant enhancement to user experiences across Silverchair’s network of client sites, particularly in the scholarly, academic, and professional sectors,” the press release notes. “Cadmore Media’s advanced video hosting solutions are integrated into Silverchair client sites, revolutionizing the presentation of multimedia content. This partnership offers numerous benefits to clients, including improved accessibility, discoverability, and engagement with scholarly materials.”

Cadmore Media’s platform “streamlines the publishing process for video content on the Silverchair Platform by integrating with existing XML workflows when video is supplementary (such as with a journal article), or by creating a new, easy XML workflow for video-first content like webinars.”

IEEE Partners With Molecular Connections for Publishing Innovations

Molecular Connections announced the following:

IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, has selected Molecular Connections (MC) to help drive its innovation efforts in its publishing operations. The collaboration would entail developing state of the art technologies including machine learning (ML) to support the critical areas of research integrity, author experience, and streamlining editorial processes across its publishing ecosystem.

IEEE plans to invest in innovative solutions to addresses critical questions around the growing demands of its members and customers to enhance the discoverability and accessibility of IEEE’s vast repository of high quality research content. Leveraging MC’s expertise in cutting-edge technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence, IEEE intends to empower scholars and practitioners to uncover valuable insights effortlessly from its vast array of published content. The collaboration will also use MC’s existing ML libraries and platform to help strengthen research integrity.
