'New OCLC Position Paper Articulates the Value of Linked Data to the Library Community'

OCLC announced the following:

OCLC, the worldwide leader in library cataloging and metadata services, has released ‘Linked data: The future of library cataloging,’ a position paper that articulates the value that linked data can bring to library catalogs, and the tools already available to help ease libraries into creating a more interconnected experience for information seekers.

The brief, 12-page paper follows OCLC’s path from decades of linked data research, to experiments and prototypes, the creation of more than 150 million WorldCat Entities, and, most recently, to the web application and APIs now available through OCLC Meridian that libraries can use to get started.

A Literary Periodical on the American South Gets Archive on Exact Editions

Exact Editions announced the following:

The Oxford American, a literary quarterly [focusing] on the American South, has launched a fully-searchable and complete digital archive available for library subscription through publishing platform Exact Editions. Stretching back to 1992 and comprising over 120 issues, the complete archive boasts comprehensive accessibility features such as a ‘Read Aloud’ function and is available seamlessly across web, iOS and Android devices through IP authentication.

Karger and Ludenso Join Forces to Help Authors Use Augmented Reality

Karger announced the following:

Karger Publishers, a global provider of scientific and medical content, has joined forces with Ludenso, a leader in augmented reality (AR) technology, to give researchers and clinicians the ability to visualize journal article data with 3D and AR. …

Using Ludenso’s platform, Karger now provides a new service to its authors, adding a new dimension to how they present their data, engage with diverse audiences, and expand the reach of their research.

Authors who include 3D models, such as molecular structures and tissue illustrations, as part of their manuscript submission will have the opportunity to turn them into interactive AR-viewable objects.

The Altmetric 500 Dataset Is a New Way to Share Research Impact

Digital Science shared the following:

Digital Science, a technology company serving stakeholders across the research ecosystem, … announces an exciting new tranche of data that throws light on how and why research cuts through to society at large—in the shape of the Altmetric 500.

The Altmetric 500, which analyses the attention for scholarly articles published in 2023, covers over 50 research categories—representing different fields of research (FoR), geographies and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—and reflects activity across 11 different attention sources. …

‘By extending the scope of the Altmetric 500 to fields of research, countries and even SDGs, we will provide a real flavour of what research has been generating interest and discussion in many different areas,’ says Cat Williams, Managing Director of Digital Science’s Data & Analytics Hub. … ‘The overall aim for the Altmetric 500 is to provide a new way to explore the different meanings of “attention” to research, highlighting the various impacts of research across different channels, platforms and cultures.’

Ithaka S+R Investigates 'How Are Faculty Using Generative AI in the Classroom?'

Dylan Ruediger, Melissa Blankstein, and Sage Love write the following for Ithaka S+R:

Since the commercial release of ChatGPT in 2022, generative AI has had an undeniable impact on higher education, reshaping student learning methods, prompting concerns regarding academic integrity, and sparking larger questions on teaching and learning. It is therefore vital to understand how instructors are currently using (or not using) generative AI in their classrooms to support teaching.

To gain insight into how instructional practices are evolving, Ithaka S+R fielded the triennial survey of postsecondary faculty with a focus on instruction as well as a section dedicated specifically to generative AI. [Now], we publish findings from the survey, with responses from 2,654 college instructors across a wide range of disciplines and institutions—the largest survey on the topic of which we are aware.
