How to Opt Out of Google AI Search
Ernie Smith writes the following in “Does One Line Fix Google?” for Tedium:Google has started adding ‘AI overviews’ to many of its search results, which essentially throw pre-processed answers that often do not match the original intent of the search. … Google quietly added something else to its results—a ‘Web’ filter that presents what Google used to look like a decade ago, no extra junk. … It’s such a questionably fascinating idea to offer something like this, and for power searchers like myself, it’s likely going to be an amazing tool. But Google’s decision to bury it ensures that few people will use it. The company has essentially bet that you’ll be better off with a pre-parsed guess produced by its AI engine. Cade Metz writes the following in “OpenAI Says It Has Begun Training a New Flagship A.I. Model” for The New York Times:OpenAI said … that it had begun training a new flagship artificial intelligence model that would succeed the GPT-4 technology that drives its popular online chatbot, ChatGPT. … OpenAI also said it was creating a new Safety and Security Committee to explore how it should handle the risks posed by the new model and future technologies. ‘While we are proud to build and release models that are industry-leading on both capabilities and safety, we welcome a robust debate at this important moment,’ the company said. Clarivate Previews the Unified Rankings Feature of the Next Journal Citation Reports
Tilla Edmunds, director of product operations, research, and analytics at Clarivate, writes the following in a preview of the 2024 Journal Citation Reports:As we prepare for the release of the Journal Citation Reports for 2024, our commitment to enhancing transparency and trust in the scholarly record takes center stage. As announced in March 2023 and described in more detail in February 2024, we are moving from edition-specific Journal Impact Factor (JIF) category rankings to unified rankings. ScienceOpen Introduces SciScore Into Its Workflow for Disability Journal to Promote Research Transparency and Reliability
The King Salman Center for Disability Research’s new OA title hosted on the ScienceOpen platform, Journal of Disability Research, is teaming up with SciScore to increase its scientific rigor through SciScore’s automatic manuscript evaluation tool. The journal features original research articles, reviews, and case studies designed to “contribute to understanding and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.”“ScienceOpen will integrate SciScore’s advanced scientific rigor and reproducibility checks into the manuscript submission workflow, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing the quality and integrity of published research in disability studies,” the press release notes. These checks include “sample size calculation, blinding, randomization procedures, comprehensive data reporting, [and] cell line authentication or validation. …” For more information, read the press release.
'CEU Selects OCLC's WorldShare Management Services to Manage 20 Libraries That Serve Over 96,000 Users in Spain'
OCLC shares the following:The Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU has selected OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services (WMS) as its fully integrated library services platform to handle all essential functions of its diverse institutions’ libraries in Spain. In addition to providing a library services platform to bring CEU libraries together, OCLC will create a single catalog of collections from participating institutions to search through one interface. … The WMS platform will be implemented in libraries serving CEU Schools, CEU Teaching School in Vigo, San Pablo CEU Foundation in Andalusia, CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia, San Pablo CEU University in Madrid, Abat Oliba University in Barcelona, and the ACdP association. In total, the platform will cover 20 libraries serving over 96,000 users. For more information, read the press release.
