Illinois Libraries Gain Unlimited OCLC Access
Illinois libraries now have unlimited access to a variety of OCLC services with a fixed annual subscription that allows libraries in the state to budget and plan for the next 3 years. Illinois libraries have unlimited use of OCLC cataloging, resource sharing, content management, and FirstSearch reference services under terms of a new 3-year agreement. Services will support and be supported by the Statewide Illinois Library Catalog (SILC), a group online union catalog created by Illinois libraries and OCLC (from information in WorldCat) that gives all Illinois citizens access to the more than 55 million items held in libraries throughout the state.The Illinois State Library brought together an advisory council of Illinois library leaders to establish a fair and equitable way to allocate each library's share of the cost for the statewide annual subscription for services. Libraries that might not have been able to participate in the OCLC cooperative in the past are now able to do so as part of the group. OCLC configures and hosts the group catalog and associated services so Illinois library staff can concentrate on other projects. Group catalogs have also been created for Florida and Missouri as well as Transportation Libraries and the Military Education and Research Library Network. Others are under way. ProQuest Adds Selected EIU ViewsWire Content
ProQuest Information and Learning (http://www.il.proquest.com) announced the addition of key selections from EIU ViewsWire to the ABI/INFORM suite of business databases for library customers. The ViewsWire service, published by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit, provides concise analytical briefings on economics, politics, and markets.EIU ViewsWire covers business regulations, economic developments, financial markets, foreign investment, industrial trends, labor conditions, political changes, and trade policies in 201 countries. It delivers three types of information: - Country alerts offering briefings on key market developments around the world
- Country views for assessments and forecasts of changing market country updates, consensus currency, interest and equity forecasts, and country forecast and risk summaries
- Country background covering facts and figures on local market and regulatory environments, including country fact sheets; economic indicators; trade, tax, and foreign exchange regulations; and weekly interest rates
The content is available at no additional cost to ABI/INFORM Complete and ABI/INFORM Global subscribers. Subscribers receive access to all content in EIU's ViewsWire product except for the 5-year forecasts, the business channel, the premium add-in channels, and content from third parties, such as Financial Times and CFO Magazine. Ovid Enhances E-Books Platform
Ovid Technologies (http://www.ovid.com) announced that it has added major enhancements and features to its electronic books platform, Books@Ovid. It now lets users search a collection of core clinical texts using new intuitive search and browse features—such as natural language search capability, relevance ranking, and back-of-the-book index browsing.New features include a single, expandable table of contents that integrates the book and chapter tables of contents and is always visible in full-text view. Tables and figures are identified separately within the table of contents for easy integration into the user's work. Users can browse by subject as well as title. When browsing by title, links are organized alphabetically for easy navigation. Enhanced searching allows users to limit results by specialty (nursing, cardiology, etc.) as well as book type for further precision (e.g., comprehensive texts, drug manuals, or clinical handbooks). Search results are ranked by relevance. Books@Ovid provides the most current content that is available, and content updates are flagged in the table of contents and within text for easy identification. Books@Ovid is now fully integrated with Journals@Ovid and Ovid bibliographic databases, thereby giving users the ability to search across the entire Ovid content repository as well as access to the full range of Ovid tools, including ask-a-librarian and personal accounts, as well as Ovid's linking to full-text journals, bibliographic records, and external Web resources.
