FIZ Karlsruhe and Max Planck Society Partner on eSciDoc
FIZ Karlsruhe and the Max Planck Society (MPS) have been awarded funding of €6.1 million (about $7.6 million) to develop a new platform for Web-based collaborative scientific work. The new project, eSciDoc, will be jointly managed by FIZ Karlsruhe and MPS. FIZ Karlsruhe (http://www.fiz-karlsruhe.de) will provide development and IT services and will operate central services. The intention is to create an integrated information, communication, and publication platform for Web-based scientific work so that scientists working in the 80 research institutes of MPS (http://www.mpg.de/english) can collaborate together.The funding for eSciDoc, which will last for 5 years, is being provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), under the framework of the German national eScience initiative. eSciDoc will address all aspects of scientific communication, from the creation and editing of information, the sharing of data with peers, and the publication of research results, to the storage and long-term archiving of research papers. It will include interactive tools and will be able to handle multiple data sources and types, including video and audio. The ability to link to external data sources will also form an integral part of the new platform. As part of a commitment to the aims of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, signed by MPS last October, eSciDoc will also enable MPS scientists to publish their research on the Internet. Hoover’s Expands its U.K. and Canada Offerings
Hoover's, Inc. (http://www.hoovers.com), a subsidiary of D&B and the publisher of Hoover's Online, announced the expansion of its offerings in the U.K. and Canada. Hoover's has introduced a new U.K. service featuring access to more than 4,000 in-depth Hoover's and 1.7 million D&B U.K. company records. In addition, to complement its database of more than 1.25 million Canadian companies, D&B Canada (http://www.dnb.ca) is now marketing Hoover's in-depth business intelligence about more than 2,300 public and private Canadian enterprises.Depending on the Hoover's Online customer's subscription level, the new U.K. service provides access to: - 1.7 million D&B U.K. basic company records
- 560,000 in-depth, downloadable D&B U.K. company records
- D&B's international database, including coverage of approximately 60,000 non-U.S./non-U.K. companies employing at least 300 people

Wiley Launches Neuroscience Journal Backfile Collection
John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced the launch of the Neuroscience Backfile Collection, the latest addition to its collection of digitized journal libraries. It is the second collection to be launched this fall, following the release of the Materials Science Backfile Collection. The Neuroscience Backfile Collection is available via Wiley InterScience (http://www.interscience.wiley.com/backfiles), Wiley's online publishing platform. The Chemistry Backfile Collection is scheduled to launch in early November.Spanning more than 100 years, the Neuroscience Backfile Collection contains digitized back-issue content across 14 journal titles, including the Journal of Comparative Neurology, the Annals of Neurology, and the Journal of Neuroscience Research. All journal articles are presented as fully searchable PDFs, with abstracts, bibliographic content, and literature citations all available in HTML. This allows for both internal linking to cited content located on Wiley InterScience and external linking via CrossRef/DOI, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and CAS to the content of hundreds of publishers worldwide.
