Morgan & Claypool Publishes First Synthesis Lectures
Morgan & Claypool Publishers (http://www.morganclaypool.com) announces the publication of the first titles in Synthesis: The Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science, a collection of original documents born digitally and delivered in a new "Lecture" format. The first titles will be available this month; approximately 100 titles are scheduled to publish in 2005.The company says that a unique lecture format differentiates Synthesis from journal articles and monographs. Each Lecture is a 50- to 100-page self-contained document that is more current than a book and more comprehensive than a journal article. The Lectures are authored by prominent engineers and computer scientists from leading institutions, such as the University of California-Berkeley, MIT, Microsoft Research, Carnegie Mellon University, Apple Computer, and Sandia National Laboratory. and dozens of others. Synthesis lectures provide engineers, graduate students, and researchers with applications-oriented content that is specific to their particular field of interest. Due to their length, the Lectures can be written and published quickly and updated frequently, a significant advantage to both readers and authors. Synthesis Lectures are available in three forms: - An online digital library for institutional use on a state-of-the-art delivery platform with sophisticated linking and alerting features
- Digital files for individual purchase (Adobe PDF) with or without accompanying print
- Moderately priced paperbacks available from library vendors and online retailers

Copyright Clearance Center Introduces Compliance Solution
Copyright Clearance Center, a provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions, has unveiled CopyRight Plus, a desktop solution that helps companies make it easier and faster for their employees to comply with copyright law. Copyright Clearance Center will demonstrate its newest offering at the Special Libraries Association 2005 Annual Conference in Toronto (June 5-8).CopyRight Plus is a customizable, secure, Web-based solution; employees can easily access it through their company's intranet. CopyRight Plus enables all employees to quickly verify their company's worldwide copyright licensing coverage from Copyright Clearance Center for various uses of content from print and electronic journals, newsletters, magazines, newspapers, and other materials. In addition, CopyRight Plus gives companies an efficient and consistent way to educate employees about their corporate compliance policies and responsibilities. Copyright Clearance Center also announced that pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc. recently became the first customer to implement the new desktop solution for its 120,000-plus employees located in at least 150 countries around the globe. ebrary Launches New Reader Software; Announces Deal with SAGE
ebrary (http://www.ebrary.com) announced that it has launched a new version of the ebrary Reader, its free software application that turns static PDF files into research-ready documents that can be cross-referenced and searched online. It now supports the Firefox and Mozilla Web browsers and offers customizable bibliographical citation formats and refined InfoTools search.ebrary now offers four different citation styles, including Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), Alliance for Computers and Writing (ACW), and the ebrary default. End users can now instantly conduct advanced searches across all ebrary documents using the Search All Documents menu item on InfoTools. They can search for key words and phrases using a number of combinations, including searching by full text, subject, title, contributor (author), or publisher. Results appear in a new browser window, so users never lose their initial place of reference. The search terms are automatically added to ebrary's Advanced Search tab, where the search may be refined further. ebrary also announced that SAGE Publications will make hundreds of full-text, scholarly monographs available through ebrary's Dynamic Content Platform (DCP). SAGE content will enhance ebrary's Academic Complete and Government Complete subscription databases with current titles in subject areas such as business and economics, communications, education, health policy and research, politics, psychology, and sociology. ebrary says it will announce additional publisher agreements at the ALA conference in late June, in conjunction with the availability of its new perpetual access option.
