PLOS Starts Accepting Submissions for Its New Journals
PLOS has opened two new journals for submissions: PLOS Complex Systems and PLOS Mental Health.The company shares the following: PLOS Mental Health … is seeking research that addresses challenges and gaps in the field of mental health research, treatment, and care in ways that put the lived experience of individuals and communities first. PLOS Complex Systems will bring together leading research of broad significance that facilitates understanding of complex systems in all disciplines. … Both journals are intended to bring a broad range of research disciplines and expert perspectives together through broad scopes that facilitate information-sharing and cross-talk among stakeholders. They’re also built on PLOS’ foundation of Open Science principles and will work with research communities to define the practices that improve research integrity, transparency, equity, and visibility in the field. A Review of ChatGPT for Dummies
Phil Shapiro, a library associate at Takoma Park Maryland Library, recently posted a YouTube review of the book ChatGPT for Dummies by Pam Baker.The book is available to download for free until Nov. 15 from BetaNews. The Latest News From Sage
Sage announced on Nov. 2 that it acquired IOS Press, “an independent publisher founded in Amsterdam in 1987 that specializes in health, life, and computer sciences. With this move, Sage acquires nearly 100 journals and a frontlist of 70 plus books each year covering subjects such as neuroscience, medical informatics, cancer research, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and the semantic web. … The acquisition marks significant growth in Sage’s open access (OA) program with the addition of more than 20 fully OA journals. It also expands core subject areas for Sage, such as psychology and engineering, and marks an investment in new areas such as AI and image processing.”On Nov. 6, Sage announced a publishing partnership and the release of a new report. “Sage has become the new journal publishing partner of the Fundación Infancia y Aprendizaje (FIA). The partnership, which will begin in January 2024, replaces Taylor & Francis (T&F) as the official publishing partner,” a press release states. “FIA Journals originally emerged as a significant platform for Spanish content dedicated to psychology and developmental studies, attracting readership across Spain and most parts of Latin America. In 2014, all FIA Journals started publishing in English as well as Spanish. Today, they publish content from authors hailing from all over the world, and they reach readers from institutions worldwide.” Technology From Sage published its third Librarian Futures report. A press release states, “The report, developed with the input of over 2,000 global academic library professionals, examines the emerging skills required to fulfill a library’s mission and meet the needs of today’s library patrons. The data was analyzed by Skilltype, in which Technology from Sage invested earlier this year.”
SirsiDynix Recommits to Partnering With Bibliotheca
SirsiDynix and Bibliotheca have extended “their technical partnership aimed at improving the interface between SirsiDynix’s web clients, including BLUEcloud Circulation and SymphonyWeb, and Bibliotheca’s staffConnect software. … The new phase of collaboration will [focus] on refining the interface for web-based clients and integrating the capabilities of staffConnect.” In addition, the companies will build on prior successes such as “support for enhanced RFID integration between Symphony and Horizon workstation-based clients.”For more information, read the press release.
The Biochemical Society Joins the Subscribe to Open Model for Its Journals
The Biochemical Society launched “Subscribe to Open (S2O) for five of its world-leading research and review journals. … For over a century, Biochemical Society journals have been supported by transactional relationships with libraries, and S2O will maintain these valued library partnerships,” according to the press release.The press release continues, “S2O is an innovative form of [licensing] model, which will extend the Society’s ability to deliver open access (OA) equitably and inclusively. It uses established channels and existing resources and infrastructure used by libraries. The initiative will be introduced in 2025 and will complement the Society’s existing OA routes—Read & Publish, Article Publishing Charge (APC) and Green OA. Its introduction is designed to ensure there is a compliant OA route for all papers published in the Society’s portfolio of journals.” For more information, read the press release.
