IFLA Opens a Discussion on Its Choice of Venue for the 2024 Congress
IFLA announced the following:On 19 June, the IFLA Governing [Board] published its decision to select Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as the host for the World Library and Information Congress 2024 (WLIC 2024). Since then, IFLA has received criticism about the decision as well as support. As a global federation, all voices are important. The Governing Board has therefore decided to seek the advice of IFLA Members around the world by means of an advisory referendum. The results of the advisory referendum will allow the Governing Board to take a more informed decision. For more information, read the news item.
OpenAI Under Fire for Allegedly Scraping Personal Data
Catherine Thorbecke reports the following for CNN:OpenAI, the company behind the viral ChatGPT tool, has been hit with a lawsuit alleging the company stole and misappropriated vast swaths of peoples’ data from the internet to train its AI tools. The proposed class action lawsuit, filed … in a California federal court, claims that OpenAI secretly scraped ‘massive amounts of personal data from the internet,’ according to the complaint. The nearly 160-page complaint alleges that this personal data, including ‘essentially every piece of data exchanged on the internet it could take,’ was also seized by the company without notice, consent or ‘just compensation.’ For more information, read the article.
Clarivate Shares 2023 Journal Citation Reports Update
Clarivate announced that it has “released the 2023 update to its annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR). This annual release identifies more than 21,500 high-quality academic journals from across 250+ scientific and research disciplines.” It incorporates metrics such as the Journal Impact Factor and the Journal Citation Indicator.“Clarivate advocates that journal editors and the wider scholarly community make use of the broad contextual information provided alongside the Journal Impact Factor to present a comprehensive view of a journal’s influence,” the company notes. “This year for the first time, all Web of Science Core Collection journals that passed the rigorous Web of Science quality criteria and were accepted before January 1, 2023, were eligible to receive a Journal Impact Factor.” For more information, read the press release.
Urban Libraries Council Publishes Leadership Brief on Promoting Democracy
The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) “published a new Leadership Brief—Libraries as Cornerstones of Democracy. This timely publication outlines the vital work public libraries are performing to ensure all community members are informed and active in protecting democracy and intellectual freedom. Libraries as Cornerstones of Democracy urges library executives to embody the value of ULC’s Declaration of Democracy by supporting and promoting the preservation of rights and active citizenry.”In addition, “the Leadership Brief highlights the core areas libraries can focus on to increase their reach in promoting a more democratic community, as outlined in the Declaration of Democracy. The Brief also spotlights the work of eight exemplary ULC member libraries in the U.S. and Canada that empower their patrons through various programs and services.” For more information, read the press release.
Jisc Studies How Generative AI Is Impacting Students
Sue Attewell, co-leader of the national centre for AI in tertiary education at Jisc, writes the following in “Exploring the Significance of Generative AI for Students”:Recently, we organised five discussion forums for tertiary education students, on Generative AI.
