DPLA Publishes a Free COVID Ebook
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) published a free ebook, The Covid Archive: A Finding Aid to Government Documents Related to the Covid19 Pandemic. An index of 3,000-plus documents, it helps people find items in DPLA’s digital archive that pertain to the U.S. federal and state government responses to the pandemic. The ebook’s creation was supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and its contents were selected by the Covid Tracking Project.For more information, read the news item.
Dubai-Based Kaloscope Social Media Metaverse Gets Introduced
The Metaverse Blog shared “How Web-3 Decentralised, Social Media Metaverse Kaloscope Is Transforming Business & Using Technology to Shape Sustainability & Future,” which states the following:Kaloscope, is the world’s first (1st) registered ‘social media metaverse’. It is defined as a Web-3, decentralised, social media metaverse, or a bridge between the physical and virtual world by developing mixed reality experiences and utilities within the Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) space. Kaloscope enables one to create [and] collect virtual spaces, as NFTs, and project an NFT collection in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Extended Reality (XR). Kirck Allen, CEO, of [Kaloscope] says, ‘Think of us like a decentralised Facebook, but in 3-dimensional form, or a virtual world with a virtual space. You can have an NFT store within [an] NFT, and share it with your friends to make your web-3 more social[.]’ The innovation behind Kaloscope is the [platform’s] ability to transform business via ‘Utility’ & ‘Community’. Kaloscope has created utilities such as diamond and gold passes behind NFTs, in order for those who own them to not only get early and exclusive air drops, but ‘real world’ in ‘real time’ perks, such as access to [VIP] events, access to bars, [etc.] called or known as ‘perkabilities’. An example of projects with ‘perkabilities’ would be Kaloscope’s involvement, with investor ColossalBit[,] and their recent launch in Dubai of the Meta Terrace—a hybrid of a virtual & physical restaurant, [lounge] bar, where NFT holders can purchase or pay using crypto currency and enjoy exclusive access to food, drinks & VR/AR experiences. Patron Point Updates Its Recommendation Service With a Staff Picks Feature
Patron Point Recommends, Patron Point’s reading recommendation service, has new functionality: a Staff Picks feature set. “Every library receives a curated list of recommendations in 25 subject areas and being directly connected to the ILS, all of the titles recommended are in the libraries’ holdings and so no time is wasted going through generic reading recommendation lists and removing titles that your library does not own,” the press release notes. “With the latest development, libraries can now use the same templates, design categories unique to their library and communities, and select their own items from their holdings that they wish to promote.” Patron Point Recommends subscribers will get the Staff Picks feature at no additional cost.For more information, read the press release (download required).
OverDrive Brings Classical Music Performances to Libby Patrons
OverDrive announced a new Libby Extra: Stingray Classica, a collection of productions of classical music performed at venues around the world. There are more than 1,000 concerts, operas, ballets, and documentaries available, including the following:- Anastasia by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen

ALA Endorses Loida Garcia-Febo for IFLA President
ALA announced that its executive board has endorsed ALA past-president Loida Garcia-Febo as IFLA president-elect 2022–2023. “If elected, Garcia-Febo would be the first Puerto Rican Latina to be IFLA President. She will bring her professional experience and personal global and multicultural worldview to the position,” the press release states. “Loida brings her extensive experience, energy, and fresh ideas to carry further the global advocacy role of libraries—not only in ensuring access to information and knowledge but also in reducing social inequalities and developing inclusion.”Already an active contributor to IFLA initiatives, she has “worked with colleagues in all regions of the world, and advocated for libraries in venues such as the United Nations on behalf of IFLA and the European Parliament. Her work has consistently supported library services for all, including multilingual and multicultural populations.” For more information, read the press release.
