ISSN Adds New National Centre for Austria
The ISSN International Centre is opening its 92nd National Centre in the ISSN Network in Austria. The Austrian Publishers and Booksellers Association in Vienna is hosting it as of April 1, 2021.“It is a great achievement for the ISSN Network to welcome Austria as a new member country and the [Austrian Publishers and Booksellers Association] as a new ISSN Centre,” says Gaëlle Béquet, director of the ISSN International Centre. “Our Austrian colleagues are seasoned professionals who work closely with publishers and show great interest in serial identification activities. The ISSN International Center stands by ISSN Austria to achieve a smooth transition for the benefit of the publishing, scholarly and library communities of this country.” For more information, read the news item.
Jisc Publishes Toolkit Supporting University Presses' OA Publishing Programs
Jisc introduced a toolkit designed to help university presses with sustainable OA publishing. It was developed with input from university presses, including from Liverpool, Westminster, University College London, and White Rose in the U.K. and Stockholm. Although the toolkit does have a U.K. focus, its suggestions are globally applicable. There are 11 main sections, and its content can be shared, reused, and repurposed thanks to its CC-BY license.“A growing number of universities and academics have set up their own presses in an attempt to take back control and autonomy away from the large commercial publishing houses,” says Graham Stone, co-developer of the toolkit. “Most of these new presses are faced with the challenge of making open access publishing a reality. This toolkit will support new and existing university and library open access publishing ventures as well as those with a hybrid model.” For more information, read the news item.
Symplectic Unveils Research Funding Solution for Streamlined Workflows
Symplectic launched its Research Funding Solution, a suite of functionality to help institutions with their research funding workflows. Part of the Elements platform, it brings together research information management and research funding activities in a secure, cloud-hosted system. The system is flexible and scalable and can be customized to the needs of individual research institutions.According to the press release, “The extended capabilities of the Research Funding Solution will support institutions with pre- and post-award activities including communicating funding opportunities, facilitating proposal development, coordinating internal reviews and approvals, and managing project administration, post award milestones and reporting.” For more information, read the press release.
Bibliotheca's cloudLibrary Gains Magazines and Newspapers
Bibliotheca unveiled cloudLibrary NewsStand, a digital service that gives libraries access to a collection of magazines and newspapers for unlimited simultaneous use. It offers an intuitive user interface, easy reading via smartphone, and access to individual articles and back issues for all publications.“We are excited to be the first company to offer libraries this affordable collection of more than 7,000 magazine and newspaper titles in over 60 languages,” says Tom Mercer, Bibliotheca’s SVP of digital products. “More importantly, libraries can leverage the diversity of the collection via an inclusive all-you-can-read model.” For now, NewsStand is available as its own app, but will soon be integrated into cloudLibrary’s app so users can browse magazines and newspapers alongside ebooks, audiobooks, digital comics, and more. OCLC and LIBER Plan Virtual Workshops on Strategic Relationships
OCLC and LIBER (Association of European Research Libraries) are hosting a virtual workshop series called Building Strategic Relationships to Advance Open Scholarship at Your Institution that will run May 4–18, 2021. There will be three workshops, each providing presentations and small group discussion activities. The programming for the series is based on “Social Interoperability in Research Support: Cross-Campus Partnerships and the University Research Enterprise,” an OCLC Research report.“Developing the skills of library staff and researchers is high on LIBER’s agenda. As part of this workshop, we hope to reach yet another target group—mid-level library managers and practitioners—and yet another skill set which is that of social interoperability,” says Astrid Verheusen, LIBER’s executive director. According to the press release, “Participants are expected to gain an increased understanding of why cross-campus collaboration can be so difficult, who the key stakeholders are and what they care about. It is expected that participants will return to their institutions with strategies and tactics to apply in relationship development.” For more information, read the press release.
