NISO Plans Privacy-Focused Conference for Sept. 16
NISO (National Information Standards Organization) is hosting Privacy in the Age of Surveillance: Everyone’s Concern, a 1-day virtual conference, on Sept. 16, 2020, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. EDT. Sessions will include Necessary Protections of Privacy (from Mark Seeley, principal at SciPubLaw), NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Privacy Framework Version 1.0 (from Dylan Gilbert, privacy policy advisor at NIST), Building Privacy Infrastructure—An Academic Library’s Perspective (from Emily Singley, head of library systems and data security officer at Boston College Libraries), and Navigating Privacy and Assessment (from Qiana Johnson, interim associate university librarian for collections strategies at Northwestern University).For more information, read the event description.
Recorded Books Offers New Edition of The Hobbit Read by Andy Serkis
Recorded Books is rolling out a new audiobook edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit that is read by the actor who portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations: Andy Serkis.“I have such vivid memories of first reading The Hobbit, when I was on the bus going to school, aged about 9 or 10,” says Serkis. “It was the first ‘grown up’ book I remember reading, and I’d often miss my stop because I was so engaged in the thrust and power of its storytelling, the beautifully drawn characters, the majesty of the epic journey. To now narrate the audiobook version of this fantastical tale of Middle-earth and its inhabitants—and to bring them to life for Tolkien fans in the U.S. and Canada—is such a wonderful, full-circle opportunity!” The audiobook is available for preorder now and will be released on Sept. 21, 2020, wherever audiobooks are sold. America Works Podcast Documents the American Workforce
The Library of Congress Blog announced the following:The American Folklife Center [AFC] is bringing the voices of workers throughout the country to listeners with ‘America Works,’ a new podcast series that celebrates the diversity and tenacity of the American workforce during a time of economic crisis and transition. Each 10-minute episode of ‘America Works’ introduces listeners to a worker whose first-person narrative adds to the wealth of our shared national experience. The first four episodes are now available on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher and at loc.gov/podcasts. A new episode will be released weekly and featured on the Library’s social media channels beginning Thursday, Sept. 10. … Each “America Works” episode is based on an interview from the AFC’s ongoing Occupational Folklife Project, a multi-year initiative to document the culture of contemporary American workers during an era of economic and social transition. Over the past 10 years, fieldworkers have compiled almost 1,000 interviews from across the country, documenting the experiences of more than 100 professions. For more information, read the blog post.
Springer Nature Launches MOOC&BOOK Course-and-Textbook Solution
Springer Nature introduced a new product line, MOOC&BOOK, with the textbook Archaeoastronomy: Introduction to the Science of Stars and Stones by Giulio Magli. The book is connected to The Science of Stars and Stones, a MOOC that is hosted on the Polytechnic University of Milan’s Polimi Open Knowledge platform. The book has direct links to augmented reality material—allowing students to virtually experience astronomically related archaeological sites—and the MOOC offers unlimited online participation. Springer Nature notes, “Students who buy both the print and the e-book can easily access the content and benefit from the numerous exercises with solutions, in addition to those offered in the MOOC. The textbook features multimedia content, such as videos and augmented reality, which can be accessed by PC, tablet, or any other mobile device.” Four more MOOC&BOOK titles are scheduled for publication in spring 2021.For more information, read the press release.
LYRASIS and Skilltype Join Forces for Info Pros' Professional Development
LYRASIS partnered with the Skilltype software platform for info pros to create new professional development and talent management opportunities in the worldwide GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) sector. LYRASIS notes, “After two years of research and development, Skilltype is making its platform available to the global GLAM sector through an exclusive distribution partnership with LYRASIS. … [Skilltype’s] design-centric approach levels the playing field by removing many of the barriers to accessing quality training opportunities, including those who rely on assistive technology.” In addition, “Skilltype for Teams, the firm’s enterprise offering, enables organizations to analyze, develop and share expertise. And in a time of resource constraints, anything we can do to streamline business processes, through combined billing for example, is a positive,” says Paul Bracke of Gonzaga University’s Foley Library, which was a Skilltype development partner and is a LYRASIS member.
