NEH's Historical Newspapers Project Hits a New Milestone
According to a press release, “Chronicling America, the free, searchable database of historical American newspapers, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and housed and maintained online at the Library of Congress, has reached a new milestone in its development: the participation of partners digitizing newspapers from 48 states and two territories.“With recent NEH grant awards to new National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) hubs covering Rhode Island, Wyoming, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Chronicling America website will now include newspapers from all U.S. states except Massachusetts and New Hampshire.” For more information, read the press release.
Harvard and MIT Host Assembly Program for Studying AI
Hilary Ross writes for The Digital Initiative at Harvard Business School, “What do a communications studies professor, a politics PhD, a technology policy advisor, and a machine learning engineer have in common? They share deep expertise in the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence—and they’re members of the 2019 Assembly program. Hosted by the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the MIT Media Lab, Assembly brings together a small cohort of technologists, managers, policymakers, and other professionals to confront emerging problems related to the ethics and governance of AI.”For more information, read the article.
ALA Urges Libraries to Present the Democracy Class Curriculum
According to a press release, “The American Library Association (ALA), a new partner of Democracy Class, encourages school and public libraries to deliver [its] one-hour program to teenage patrons in advance of National Voter Registration Day, Tuesday, September 24, 2019. A premier partner of National Voter Registration Day, ALA is also urging libraries to observe the nonpartisan, unofficial holiday, which is celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September.“An initiative of the nonpartisan nonprofit Rock the Vote, Democracy Class is a free curriculum that educates high-school-aged students about the importance and history of voting and pre-registers and registers them to vote. The curriculum comes with a webinar about implementing the program, Voting and Voices: Engaging Students and Families in Democracy. The webinar covers state-specific guides for conducting registration drives, strategies to help combat polarization in the classroom, and tips for creating a culture that encourages civil discourse.” For more information, read the press release.
Digital Science and ISSI Team Up to Offer Free Data Access
Digital Science partnered with the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) to provide ISSI members with enhanced access to Dimensions and Altmetric data. Beginning on Oct. 1, 2019, ISSI members can apply for no-cost access to Dimensions’ and Altmetric’s web tools and APIs. Dimensions and Altmetric have existing no-cost data-sharing programs that are open to those doing noncommercial scientometrics research.“This partnership provides all of our members with access to high-quality data, enhances replicability and reproducibility within the field, and provides an extremely rich dataset for analyses,” says Cassidy Sugimoto, ISSI’s president. Wiley Takes Over Publication of Two AAEA Journals
Wiley and the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) agreed to a partnership that allows Wiley to assume publishing responsibility for two AAEA journals starting in January 2020. The American Journal of Agricultural Economics “provides a global forum for creative and scholarly work on the economics of agriculture and food, natural resources and the environment, and rural and community development,” and Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy “addresses contemporary and emerging policy issues within an economic framework that informs the decision-making and policy-making community.”The partnership gives AAEA “expanded innovative tools and services to improve the author experience throughout the publishing process. It will also help to drive the accessibility, discoverability and impact of the two journals through new digital and platform capabilities.” For more information, read the press release.
