'Interpreting Elsevier's Acquisition of Aries Systems' by Kent Anderson
Kent Anderson writes on The Scholarly Kitchen blog, “Last Thursday, news of Elsevier’s acquisition of Aries Systems broke, and the reactions were varied. Some boasted that they’d predicted moves along these lines. Others speculated about a possible boycott of Elsevier and Aries journals. And some decried the lack of ‘independent’ options in the space Aries helped to create—online manuscript submission and management systems.”He notes that “Elsevier’s acquisitions have been paving a path into data and analytics for a while now (Mendeley, Plum), with some strong content-source positioning (bePress and SSRN) adding even more to their growing portfolio of interesting strategic products. None has had the combination of strong recurring revenues and high switching costs of Aries Systems, however, which sets this acquisition apart in my mind.” For more information, read the blog post.

'How to Teach Information Literacy in an Era of Lies' by David Gooblar
David Gooblar writes in The Chronicle of Higher Education, “Many faculty members believe a key part of our role is helping students understand and thrive in the world as it is. But to do that, don’t we need to find some kind of shared understanding of that world? To succeed in college and in life afterward, students need to be able to tell a truth from a falsehood. And clearly, that is not as easy as it seems.”Gooblar believes that teachers in every discipline should make teaching information literacy a priority. Archive360 to Host Webinar on California Privacy Act
Archive360 will host a webinar on Aug. 9, 2018, at 11 a.m. EDT, to help people understand the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, which affects all organizations that conduct business with California residents. “Following on the heels of the official commencement of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California’s legislature has passed what is now the United [States’] most stringent data privacy law,” the company writes. “The new California Privacy Law (AB 375) empowers California consumers with control and specific rights regarding how their personal data can be collected, used and sold, as well as provided upon consumer request.”The webinar will help organizations learn about their new responsibilities, how to meet the law’s requirements, and its legal and financial noncompliance consequences.
