CLOCKSS Agrees to Preserve Crossref Metadata
The CLOCKSS system will preserve all Crossref metadata. Crossref has bibliographic information for 97 million scholarly articles and book content and is the underlying infrastructure for reference linking, plagiarism checking, license information, and other mainstays of scholarly publishing.“It is important for any infrastructure service to have backup plans in place,” says Ed Pentz, Crossref’s executive director. “Combined with other archival services, by preserving our metadata in the CLOCKSS Archive, we are ensuring that we have a strong contingency plan, as part of our commitment to persistence of the scholarly record for the long-term.” For more information, read the news.
The Authors Guild Adds Regional Chapters and Opens Dialogue With Amazon
According to Publishing Perspectives’ editor-in-chief, Porter Anderson, the Authors Guild “announced its creation of 14 newly devised regional chapters, 13 of them outside the New York area, with more to be added within a year’s time” as part of a new outreach effort. Two members of the guild lead each chapter. They will help develop events and programs that cater to local needs.Additionally, the guild “has announced that it ‘has arranged a procedure with Amazon for resolving authors’ complaints with their Amazon book listings.’ … The effort is in response to what the guild reports are members raising ‘a variety of concerns about their Amazon listings,’” including Buy boxes that point to incorrect listings and customer reviews that violate Amazon’s guidelines. SirsiDynix Makes BLUEcloud Analytics Available via EOS.Web
SirsiDynix announced that its BLUEcloud Analytics platform is now available for its EOS.Web ILS. This means that EOS.Web customers can have access to analytics, dashboards, charts, and data visualizations that give them insight into how their library is being used.According to the press release, “It will make the reporting process for EOS.Web libraries more efficient, more creative, and easier than ever before.” Bill Davison, SirsiDynix’s CEO, says, “We see this new tool for EOS.Web significantly enhancing special libraries’ ability to surface insights and show them to management.” For more information, read the press release.
Gale Publishes Archive of 19th-Century Youth Newspapers
Gale rolled out a new digital archive, Amateur Newspapers From the American Antiquarian Society. According to the press release, it’s “considered the social media of the 19th century and gives students and researchers a unique inside look at how teens and young adults of the period expressed themselves and their opinions to the world.”The tens of thousands of issues in the archive are composed of editorials, original short fiction, essays, poetry, and other writings—there are “more than 80,000 pages of content, making it the largest and most comprehensive resource of its kind for the study of 19th century youth culture. …” There are newspapers from 48 U.S. states and several from Canada. Nature Unveils Nature Index 2018 Annual Tables
Nature released the Nature Index 2018 Annual Tables, which show that the U.S. “is the world’s largest contributor to high-quality scientific research papers, followed by China and Germany. ... These tables track by country and institution the research published in 82 high-quality journals each year, counting both the total number of papers and the share of authorship of each paper,” according to the press release.“The Nature Index Annual Tables show calendar year output in Nature Index journals for the last three years, and reveal the countries, institutions and companies that are leading the way in publishing high-quality global science. … 49 institutions from China have improved their positions in the global top 500 institutions tables from the previous year, with an additional 14 Chinese institutions entering the top 500 and only 15 losing ground. In contrast, 62 US institutions increased their rank and 74 dropped down.” For more information, read the press release.
